Feminine locative (-i)

The Locative Case for Feminine Nouns

In the previous lesson, you learned how to talk about locations using masculine and neuter nouns. Now, let's look at feminine nouns.

For feminine nouns in the singular, the locative ending is -i. Simply replace the final -a of the noun with -i:

  • kuhinja (kitchen) → u kuhinji
  • pošta (post office) → u pošti
  • stolica (chair) → na stolici

Note: A common spelling change occurs when a feminine noun ends in -ka. The k changes to a c before the -i. For example, banka (bank) becomes u banci.

Mother is cooking soup in the kitchen.
Majka kuha juhu u kuhinji.
I am in the bank.
U banci sam.
The cat is sleeping on the chair.
Mačka spava na stolici.

Around Town and at Home

This rule applies to many common buildings, stores, and rooms, which are frequently feminine in Croatian. Notice how the ending always changes to -i after u (in) or na (on/at).

The doctor works in the hospital.
Liječnik radi u bolnici.
The students are reading in the library.
Studenti čitaju u knjižnici.
We are looking for bread in the bakery.
Tražimo kruh u pekarnici.
Where is the window in the bathroom?
Gdje je prozor u kupaonici?
