Despite and in spite of (usprkos, unatoč)

Despite (Usprkos)

Stargazing can be difficult near the city. To say that an action happens "despite" an obstacle, use the preposition usprkos.

Crucially, usprkos requires the noun phrase following it to be in the dative case. As a quick reminder, for masculine and neuter nouns, this usually means adding the ending -u. Plural nouns typically take -ima.

Despite the light pollution, we see the stars.
Usprkos svjetlosnom zagađenju, vidimo zvijezde.
Astronomers observe the sky despite the clouds.
Astronomi promatraju nebo usprkos oblacima.

In Spite Of (Unatoč)

You can also use the preposition unatoč (in spite of). It has the exact same meaning as usprkos, and it also requires the dative case.

In spite of the bad weather, the sky is interesting at night.
Unatoč lošem vremenu, nebo je noću zanimljivo.

When dealing with feminine nouns like kiša (rain), the dative singular ending is -i.

The night observation is successful in spite of the rain.
Noćno promatranje je uspješno unatoč kiši.

Keeping Your Eyes on the Sky

Whether you are observing the sky with the naked eye (golim okom) or using instruments, you can use these prepositions interchangeably to express perseverance against smog or bad weather.

The planet is visible with the naked eye despite the smog.
Planet je vidljiv golim okom usprkos smogu.
Despite the light pollution, you can see the stars with binoculars.
Unatoč svjetlosnom zagađenju, možete vidjeti zvijezde dalekozorom.
Despite the bad weather, the astronomers did not cancel the observation.
Usprkos lošem vremenu, astronomi nisu otkazali promatranje.
