Concessive conditionals express a hypothetical situation that won't change an outcome. In Croatian, use the conjunctions čak i ako or pa makar for "even if." Always separate these clauses with a comma.
Using "čak i ako"
The conjunction čak i ako uses standard indicative tenses.
| Even if the stuntman doesn't open the parachute immediately, he has a spare one. | Čak i ako kaskader odmah ne otvori padobran, ima rezervni. |
| I love adrenaline, even if the sport is more dangerous than football. | Volim adrenalin, čak i ako je sport opasniji od nogometa. |
Using "pa makar"
Pa makar carries a stronger, more defiant tone. While it can be used with regular tenses, it is frequently followed directly by the active past participle (the l-participle) without an auxiliary verb.
| He will try that extreme sport with pleasure, even if he gets scared. | On će probati taj ekstremni sport sa zadovoljstvom, pa makar se uplašio. |
| The stuntman will jump near the abyss, even if that were dangerous. | Kaskader će skočiti blizu ponora, pa makar to bilo opasno. |
| I won't dive near that ship, even if you paid me a million euros! | Neću zaroniti blizu onog broda, pa makar mi platili milijun eura! |
