Counting Mixed Groups and Children
In Croatian, when counting mixed-gender groups or children (djeca), use collective numerals:
- 2: dvoje
- 3: troje
- 4: četvero
- 5: petero
- 6: šestero
The noun following a collective numeral must be in the genitive case. For example, the genitive of djeca is djece, and the genitive of ljudi (people) is ljudi. Verbs accompanying these subjects take a singular form.
| Two children are going to the amusement park. | Dvoje djece ide u lunapark. |
| A parent will come to pick up three children in front of the amusement park. | Roditelj će doći po troje djece ispred lunaparka. |
| Only four people can enter the carriage. | Samo četvero ljudi može ući u vagon. |
| Five children are going onto the carousel. | Na vrtuljak ide petero djece. |
Directing Groups: Front and Back
When organizing riders at an amusement park (lunapark), you can direct groups to specific seats on a carousel (vrtuljak) or in a carriage (vagon) using the spatial adverbs sprijeda (in the front) and straga (in the back).
| Two children sit in the front, and four in the back. | Dvoje djece sjedi sprijeda, a četvero straga. |
| Three children are sitting in the front on the carousel. | Troje djece sjedi sprijeda na vrtuljku. |
| Five people must exit in the back. | Petero ljudi mora izaći straga. |
