Bread Making & Bakery

Yeast and Rye Bread

Yeast (kvasac) is an essential baking ingredient. When stating what ingredients you are baking with, use the preposition s (with) followed by the instrumental case. For a masculine noun like kvasac, this changes the ending to -em (s kvascem).

I am baking bread with yeast and water.
Pečem kruh s kvascem i vodom.

Rye is raženi. Use this adjective to specify the type of bread (kruh).

Do you bake rye bread today?
Pečete li danas raženi kruh?

Wholewheat Bread and Rolls

Another common type of bread is wholewheat (integralni).

They are baking wholewheat bread with yeast.
Oni peku integralni kruh s kvascem.

For a smaller bite, reach for a roll or pastry (pecivo). Because pecivo is a neuter noun, modifying pronouns like ovo (this) or ono (that) must match its gender.

This roll is soft.
Ovo pecivo je meko.

Seeds and Sesame

A seed is sjemenka, but you will usually encounter the plural form, sjemenke.

This roll has seeds.
Ovo pecivo ima sjemenke.

Sesame is sezam. Just like with yeast, when talking about eating bread with sesame, use the preposition sa (a variation of s) followed by the instrumental case (sa sezamom).

That roll with sesame is tasty.
Ono pecivo sa sezamom je ukusno.

Sunflowers and Crispy Crusts

Sunflower is suncokret. To say sunflower seeds (literally "seeds of the sunflower"), use the genitive case: sjemenke suncokreta.

I am putting sunflower seeds into the dough.
Stavljam sjemenke suncokreta u tijesto.

A crust is kora, and crispy is hrskav. In the accusative case (when describing what a bread has), the feminine noun kora becomes koru, so its adjective changes to match (hrskavu).

This bread has a crispy crust.
Ovaj kruh ima hrskavu koru.

Corn Bread

Finally, corn bread is kukuruzni kruh. When baking it in the oven, use the preposition u (in) with the locative case (u pećnici).

We bake corn bread in the oven.
Pečemo kukuruzni kruh u pećnici.
That corn bread is warm.
Taj kukuruzni kruh je topao.
