Attenuative verbs (po-)

Doing Things "For a Bit"

In English, when we want to sound polite or casual, we often add phrases like "for a bit," "a little," or "briefly." In Croatian, you can express this softer, limited duration by adding the prefix po- to the beginning of a verb.

This is called the attenuative aspect. It is incredibly useful at casual networking events or at the office when you want to keep your requests and statements light and low-pressure.

For example, instead of demanding a long, formal conversation, you can soften your approach by using verbs like porazgovarati (to chat briefly) or popričati (to talk a little).

I would like to chat briefly about the new clients.
Želio bih porazgovarati o novim klijentima.
I want to talk a little with that new colleague.
Želim popričati s tim novim kolegom.

Softening Your Work and Thoughts

This prefix works with many other verbs to indicate you are doing an action to a small degree or just for a moment. You can use it to talk about working on something a little (poraditi), thinking something over for a moment (porazmisliti), or just hanging out and mingling for a bit (podružiti se).

I will work a little on my presentation.
Poradit ću na svojoj prezentaciji.
I must think for a moment about your offer.
Moram porazmisliti o tvojoj ponudi.
Let's hang out for a bit after the meeting.
Idemo se podružiti poslije sastanka.

Everyday Brief Actions

You will spot the po- prefix on many everyday actions to suggest doing them just for a short time.

Whether you are suggesting sitting down for a while (posjediti), playing around with a new concept (poigrati se), or asking a colleague to quickly watch your bag (počuvati), this little prefix helps you sound friendly and easygoing.

We can sit for a while in the café with the new colleagues.
Možemo posjediti u kafiću s novim kolegama.
Can we play around a bit with that idea?
Možemo li se poigrati s tom idejom?
Can you watch my bag for a bit?
Možeš li mi počuvati torbu?
