Somewhere (negdje)
When you lose an item and hope it is around, or you are asking where it might be, use the indefinite adverb negdje (somewhere).
| Did you accidentally forget the key somewhere? | Jesi li slučajno negdje zaboravio ključ? |
| It probably fell out somewhere. | Vjerojatno je negdje ispao. |
| Why are you panicking, the wallet must be somewhere! | Zašto paničariš, novčanik mora biti negdje! |
Nowhere (nigdje) and Double Negation
When a frantic search turns up empty, use the negative adverb nigdje (nowhere / anywhere).
Crucially, Croatian requires double negation. Whenever you use a negative word like nigdje, the main verb in the sentence MUST also be negative (using words like ne, nije, or nema).
| My passport is not in the pocket, I cannot find it anywhere. | Moja putovnica nije u džepu, ne mogu je nigdje pronaći. |
| I searched the whole apartment, but it is nowhere. | Pretražio sam cijeli stan, ali nigdje ga nema. |
You can even stack multiple negative words together in a single sentence—such as nitko (nobody) and nigdje—as long as the verb remains negative.
| Nobody can find your wallet anywhere! | Nitko nigdje ne može naći tvoj novčanik! |
Everywhere (svugdje)
When you are turning the house upside down, you might need to look svugdje (everywhere).
| Search everywhere, do not just panic! | Traži svugdje, nemoj samo paničariti! |
| I will go home, I cannot look for him everywhere. | Otići ću kući, ne mogu ga svugdje tražiti. |
