Adjectives of lack (bez-)

Adjectives of Lack

To describe a lack of something, Croatian uses the prefix bez- (meaning "without" or "-less"). When attached to a noun root, the prefix often undergoes sound changes to make pronunciation easier.

The Standard Prefix: bez-

If the root word begins with a vowel or a voiced consonant (like b, d, g, v, z, or m), the prefix remains bez-.

Our arrival was painless and carefree.
Naš dolazak bio je bezbolan i bezbrižan.
Do not be afraid, the forest is harmless.
Nemoj se bojati, šuma je bezopasna.

Voice Assimilation: bes-

When the root begins with a voiceless consonant (such as p, t, k, s, or c), the z changes into an s.

The silence here is uncompromising.
Tišina je ovdje beskompromisna.
I was helpless without a mobile phone.
Bio sam bespomoćan bez mobitela.

Sound Assimilation: beš-

If the root begins with š, č, or ć, the z transforms into an š to match the sound of the following consonant.

This noiseless place is perfect for meditating.
Ovo bešumno mjesto je savršeno za meditiranje.

Adjective Agreement

Once formed, these derived words behave exactly like regular Croatian adjectives, taking on the appropriate endings to agree with their noun's gender, number, and case.

During relaxation, every problem is insignificant.
Tijekom opuštanja, svaki problem je beznačajan.
I am just a nameless guest in this noiseless environment.
Ja sam samo bezimeni gost u ovom bešumnom okruženju.
