Adjective Agreement
In Croatian, adjectives change their endings to match the gender of the noun they describe. The dictionary gives you the masculine singular form.
| red | crven |
Masculine Nouns
Most masculine singular nouns end in a consonant. Conveniently, masculine adjectives usually do too.
| The car is red. | Automobil je crven. |
| This city is gray. | Ovaj grad je siv. |
Feminine Nouns
Feminine singular nouns usually end in -a. To make an adjective feminine, add -a to the masculine form.
| The apple is red. | Jabuka je crvena. |
| This shoe is yellow. | Ova cipela je žuta. |
Neuter Nouns
Neuter singular nouns usually end in -o or -e. To match them, add -o (or sometimes -e) to the masculine adjective.
| This lake is blue. | Ovo jezero je plavo. |
| The tree is green. | Stablo je zeleno. |
The Word for "Color"
The word for "color" (boja) is a feminine noun. Any adjective describing the color itself must also take the feminine -a ending.
| color | boja |
| That is a beautiful color. | To je lijepa boja. |
Putting It All Together
Here is a summary of how an adjective changes across the three genders:
| Masculine | Feminine | Neuter |
|---|---|---|
| crn (black) | crna | crno |
| žut (yellow) | žuta | žuto |
| bijel (white) | bijela | bijelo |
| The cat is black. | Mačka je crna. |
| The milk is white. | Mlijeko je bijelo. |
| The building is black and white. | Zgrada je crna i bijela. |
