Abstract Nouns with -ost
In Croatian, you can easily turn adjectives into abstract nouns to discuss concepts, philosophy, and ethics. You do this by adding the suffix -ost to the adjective stem.
| honesty | iskrenost |
Crucially, all abstract nouns ending in -ost are feminine, even though they end in a consonant rather than the typical -a.
| Honesty and the importance of truth are always connected. | Iskrenost i važnost istine su uvijek povezane. |
| If perfect equality existed, we would have justice. | Kad bi savršena jednakost postojala, imali bismo pravednost. |
Many of these philosophical concepts come in contrasting pairs, giving you the vocabulary to debate existential topics.
| Objectivity is hard, while subjectivity is completely natural. | Objektivnost je teška, dok je subjektivnost potpuno prirodna. |
Because these are feminine nouns ending in a consonant, they follow a special declension pattern (often called the i-declension). When you need to use them in the genitive or locative cases, you will see the ending -i added to the word (for example, moralnost becomes moralnosti, and složenost becomes složenosti).
| We often discuss the complexity of morality. | Često raspravljamo o složenosti moralnosti. |
| I am afraid of transience, and I dream of infinity. | Strah me je prolaznosti, a sanjam o beskonačnosti. |
Adding -ost is a highly productive pattern in Croatian. If you know the underlying adjective, you can quickly form the abstract noun and elevate your discussions.
| Is objectivity possible when we understand transience? | Je li objektivnost moguća kad razumijemo prolaznost? |
