Questions & Answers about كيف نربي طفلا شقيا؟
Why does the verb نربي start with a 'nu-' sound rather than 'na-'?
The 'nu-' prefix tells us this is a Form II verb, ربى (to raise or educate). In the present tense, verbs in Forms II, III, and IV always take a damma (the 'u' vowel) on the present-tense prefix. If it were a basic Form I verb, it would start with a fatha ('na-').
Why is there an extra alif added to the end of طفلا شقيا?
This extra alif acts as a 'seat' for the double fatha (tanwin fatha), which marks the accusative case (mansub). Because the child is the direct object receiving the action of the verb نربي, both the indefinite noun طفل and its matching adjective شقي must take this accusative ending.
I've seen the root for شقي used to mean 'miserable' or 'wretched'. Why does it mean 'naughty' here?
You are correct about the classical root meaning! However, in Modern Standard Arabic and many spoken dialects, the word شقي has softened significantly when applied to children. In this context, it simply means 'naughty', 'mischievous', or 'hyperactive'.
