Questions & Answers about أسس حلفاؤنا ائتلافا قويا.
Why is the hamza in حلفاؤنا written on a waw instead of on the line?
The word حلفاء (allies) is an extended noun, meaning it ends in an alif followed by a hamza. When a pronoun like نا is attached, the hamza's seat changes based on its grammatical case. Because the allies are the subject of the sentence, the word is in the nominative case. The hamza takes a damma and is seated on a waw, resulting in حلفاؤنا.
How would حلفاؤنا be spelled if it were the object of the sentence, as in 'We met our allies'?
If it were the direct object, it would be in the accusative case. For extended nouns with attached pronouns, the accusative hamza takes a fatha and sits directly on the line, so it would be spelled حلفاءنا. If it were in the genitive case after a preposition, the hamza would sit on a yaa shape, becoming حلفائنا.
What is the singular form of حلفاء and what plural pattern does it follow?
The singular is حليف (ally). It follows a common broken plural pattern for nouns and adjectives that have the 'fa'eel' form, similar to how صديق (friend) becomes أصدقاء.
Why is the second letter of ائتلافا a hamza on a yaa seat (ئـ)?
