Questions & Answers about هذه المبشرة ليست بجديدة.
Why is there a بـ (bi-) attached to جديدة?
The letter بـ here is an extra preposition used to emphasize the negation after ليس. It does not translate to a specific English word; it just makes the statement stronger, similar to saying the grater is not 'at all' new.
How does the بـ affect the grammatical case of جديدة?
Because of the preposition بـ, the word جديدة takes the genitive case and ends with a kasratayn (bi-jadīdatin). If the بـ were removed, the predicate of ليس would take the accusative case, making it ليست جديدةً (laysat jadīdatan).
The word المبشرة (grater) starts with a مـ. Is this a specific noun pattern?
Yes, it follows a common pattern for nouns of instrument (tools used to perform an action). Words matching this structure often indicate tools, such as مِكْنَسَة (broom) from the root for sweeping. Here, it comes from the root for grating or scraping.
Why do we use ليست instead of ليس?
The negation word ليس functions like a verb and must agree with the subject in gender. Because المبشرة is feminine (ending in a taa marbuta), the feminine form ليست (laysat) is required.
