Questions & Answers about منح الأستاذ وساما عن جدارة.
Why does وساما have an accusative ending if the sentence is passive?
This is because the verb منح (to grant/award) is a doubly-transitive verb—it takes two direct objects in the active voice (e.g., "They awarded the professor a medal"). When converted to the passive voice, only the first object (الأستاذ) gets promoted to the proxy subject and takes the nominative case. The second object (وساما) is left behind and remains in the accusative case.
How do we vowelize and pronounce the verb منح here?
It is read as مُنِحَ (muniḥa). Since it is a Form I past-tense verb in the passive voice, it follows the standard fu'ila vowel pattern: a damma on the first root letter and a kasra on the second.
If I wanted to make "a medal" the proxy subject instead of the professor, how would the sentence change?
If "a medal" becomes the proxy subject, it would take the nominative case: وسامٌ (wisāmun). However, because you are promoting the second object, the original first object (the recipient) can no longer sit as a direct object and usually takes the preposition لِـ (to). The sentence would become مُنِحَ وسامٌ للأستاذِ (A medal was awarded to the professor).
What is the literal translation of عن جدارة and how is it used?
The noun جدارة translates to "merit", "worthiness", or "competence". The preposition عن here indicates the basis or source of the action (literally "out of merit"). Together, عن جدارة is a very common fixed adverbial phrase meaning "deservedly" or "well-deserved".
