Questions & Answers about عازف الكمان مشهور جدا.
Why doesn't the word for player (عازف) have the definite article ال (al-) attached to it?
The phrase عازف الكمان is an Idafa (a possession or relationship construction) literally meaning 'player of the violin'. In an Idafa, the first word never takes ال. It becomes definite automatically because the second word, الكمان (the violin), is definite.
I learned the word for 'to play' is لعب. Why does this sentence use عازف?
The root for لعب is only used for playing games or sports. Playing a musical instrument requires the root ع ز ف (azafa). From this root, we get the noun عازف (aazif), which specifically means an instrument player or musician.
What word pattern does مشهور (famous) follow?
It follows the مفعول (maf'ool) pattern, which creates passive participles (words describing the receiver of an action). It comes from the root ش ه ر (sh-h-r), which relates to making something public or apparent. Literally, مشهور means 'made known', which translates to 'famous'.
Why does جدا (very) end with an extra alif and two small diagonal lines?
Those lines are called tanween fatha, which produces the 'an' sound at the end of the word (jiddan). It marks the accusative case. In Arabic, words used as adverbs, such as جدا (very) or دائما (always), are typically locked into this case and take this specific spelling.
