Questions & Answers about فبراير شهر قصير.
Why isn't there a word for "is" in this sentence?
In Arabic, sentences that state "A is B" do not use a "to be" verb in the present tense. Instead, placing the definite subject فبراير right before the indefinite noun phrase شهر قصير automatically creates the meaning "February is a short month."
Why does the adjective قصير come after شهر instead of before it?
Arabic adjectives always follow the noun they modify. Notice that قصير (short) exactly matches شهر (month) by being masculine, singular, and indefinite. If we added the prefix ال to both, it would turn into a descriptive phrase meaning "the short month" rather than completing a full sentence.
Why doesn't the word فبراير have the definite article ال (the) attached to it?
Names of months, just like names of people and most cities, are proper nouns. This means فبراير is already considered definite by its very nature, so it does not need the prefix ال to be specific.
