Questions & Answers about هل شككت في الحقيقة؟
Why is the verb شككت spelled with two ك letters instead of the shadda (ّ) we see in the dictionary form شكّ?
This is a doubled verb (الفعل المضعف), meaning the second and third letters of its root are the same (ش-ك-ك). When we conjugate it in the past tense for I, we, or you (first and second person pronouns), the doubled letter un-doubles and splits into two separate letters. So, شكّ (he doubted) becomes شككتَ (you doubted).
Why do we use the preposition في (in) after the verb here? The English translation just says doubt the truth.
In Arabic, the verb شكّ (to doubt) requires the preposition في to connect to its object. While in English we say I doubt the truth, in Arabic it is quite literally phrased as I doubt in the truth (شككت في الحقيقة).
Does شككت mean you (masculine) doubted or you (feminine) doubted?
Without written short vowel marks (tashkeel), it could be either! It is pronounced shakakta when speaking to a man and shakakti when speaking to a woman. You would rely on the context of the conversation to know who is being addressed.
Could I just ask شككت في الحقيقة؟ with a questioning tone, without using هل?
Yes! In everyday spoken Arabic and informal situations, simply raising your pitch at the end of the sentence works perfectly to indicate a question. However, in written Modern Standard Arabic, using the question word هل at the beginning of a yes/no question is the standard way to show you are asking a question.
