Questions & Answers about أهلا، أين أنت الآن؟

Why is there no word for "are" in this sentence?
In Arabic, there is no direct translation for the present tense forms of the verb "to be" like "is", "am", or "are". You simply put the pronoun أنت right next to the question word, and the "are" is automatically understood.
How do I know whether to pronounce أنت as "anta" or "anti"?
Without the short vowel marks written out, أنت can be read as either anta when talking to a man, or anti when talking to a woman. Since they look identical in plain text, you have to know who is being spoken to from the context!
Why does أهلا end in an "an" sound if there is no letter Noon (ن) at the end?
The "an" sound comes from a special double-vowel mark called "tanween" on the final letter of أهلا. It is usually written as two little dashes over the letter, but even when the marks are left out in everyday writing, the word is still pronounced with the "an" sound.
What is the squiggly line over the Alif in الآن (now)?
That symbol is called a "maddah". It tells you to pronounce the letter as a long, stretched out "aa" sound. So الآن is pronounced "al-aan", holding out the middle vowel.
