Questions & Answers about الأفلام ممتعة هذه الأسابيع.
What are the singular forms of الأفلام (the films) and الأسابيع (the weeks)?
The singular of الأفلام is فيلم (film). The singular of الأسابيع is أسبوع (week). Instead of just adding a regular plural suffix at the end, broken plurals completely change the internal structure and vowels of the word. While you will eventually notice common patterns, it is always best to memorize the broken plural form alongside every new noun you learn!
Why is the adjective ممتعة (enjoyable) in the singular feminine form if it describes plural films?
This is a crucial Arabic rule: all non-human plurals are treated grammatically as singular feminine. Since films are objects and not people, any adjective describing them must be in the singular feminine form. That is why ممتعة ends with the feminine marker Ta Marbuta (ة) instead of a plural suffix.
Why does the sentence use هذه (this - singular feminine) to say 'these' weeks?
This is the exact same non-human plural rule in action! Because الأسابيع (weeks) is a non-human plural, the grammar treats it as a single female entity. So, instead of using a plural word for 'these', Arabic uses the singular feminine demonstrative word هذه (this).
I do not see a word for 'are' in this Arabic sentence. Why is that?
Arabic does not use a 'to be' verb (like is, am, or are) in the present tense. To say 'The films are enjoyable', you simply put the defined subject الأفلام (the films) right next to the adjective ممتعة (enjoyable). The 'are' is naturally understood from the structure!
