هل عندك سؤال؟

Questions & Answers about هل عندك سؤال؟

Why does عندك mean "you have" if there is no verb?
In Arabic, there is no direct verb for "to have". Instead, we use prepositions like عند, which means "at" or "with". By attaching the pronoun suffix ـك (you), we get عندك (literally "at you"). This acts like a verb to express "you have".
The translation specifies "you (m)". How would I ask this to a woman?
You change the invisible short vowel on the suffix ـك. For a man, it is pronounced "ka" (عندكَ). For a woman, it is pronounced "ki" (عندكِ). Since short vowels usually aren't written in everyday text, the spelling عندك stays exactly the same!
Where is the Arabic word for "a" in "a question"?
Arabic does not have words for "a" or "an". If a noun does not have the definite article الـ (the) attached to its beginning, it is automatically indefinite. So, سؤال on its own simply means "a question".
Why do we need هل when there is already a question mark?
هل is a special word used to turn a regular statement into a "yes or no" question. Where English adds helper words like "do" or "does" to make a question (like "Do you have...?"), Arabic simply puts هل at the very beginning of the sentence.
