هل الطبيب في المستشفى؟

Questions & Answers about هل الطبيب في المستشفى؟

Where is the word for "is" in this Arabic question?
Arabic doesn't use a word for "is" or "are" in the present tense. To ask "Is the doctor in the hospital?", you just take the regular statement ("The doctor in the hospital") and put the question word هل at the very beginning.
Could I use the other question particle أ instead of هل for this sentence?
It is generally avoided here. While both are used for yes/no questions, أ is usually not placed right before a word that starts with "the" (ال). Because الطبيب starts with "the", هل is the natural and correct choice.
I don't hear the "L" sound in the word for "the doctor" (الطبيب). Why is that?
The Arabic letter ط is a "sun letter." When a word starts with a sun letter, the "L" sound in the prefix for "the" (ال) disappears, and you double the first letter of the word instead. That is why it is pronounced "at-tabeeb", not "al-tabeeb".
Why does the word for hospital (المستشفى) end in what looks like a ي (ya) without dots?
That special letter is called an "alif maqsura." It only appears at the ends of words and sounds exactly like a regular long "a" (like an ا). It is a permanent part of the spelling for this specific word.
