Without (دون / بدون)

This lesson teaches you how to express doing something "without" another action or object. We will practice this by talking about body language, facial expressions, and silent communication.

Without a Noun: دون / بدون

To say "without" followed by a noun, Arabic uses the word دون or بدون. They are generally interchangeable. When you place a noun directly after these words, they form an Idafa (genitive construction). This means the noun that follows will be in the genitive case.

Without an Action: دون أن

When you want to express "without doing" an action, you cannot place a verb directly after دون or بدون. Instead, you must add the particle أن to connect them, creating the phrase دون أن or بدون أن.

Because of the particle أن, the present tense verb that immediately follows it must take the subjunctive mood.

Silent Communication

Throughout this lesson, you will encounter useful verbs for non-verbal communication, such as "to point" (أشار), "to frown" (عبس), "to wink" (غمز), and "to sigh" (تنهد). Notice how these actions are paired with our "without" structures to describe completely silent interactions.

Here is a sentence that perfectly contrasts both grammar points, using "without" + a verb followed by "without" + a noun:
