Exploring underground caves often leads to unexpected discoveries. When spelunking, you might encounter strange organisms or face extreme conditions. To describe these surprising elements, Arabic uses a specific particle to express the idea of "even."
The Inclusive Particle حتى
The particle حتى is incredibly versatile in Arabic. While it is frequently used to mean "until," it also functions as an additive or inclusive particle meaning "even." It is used to highlight something extreme, surprising, or unexpected.
When meaning "even," حتى is placed directly before the noun it modifies. It can appear at the beginning of a sentence to emphasize a surprising subject:
| Even the dark corridor has bright moss in it. | حتى الدهليز المظلم فيه طحلب ساطع.hattâ ad-dihlîzu al-muzlimu fîhi tuhlubun sâti'un |
| Even the small fungus glowed suddenly. | حتى الفطر الصغير توهج فجأة.hattâ al-futru as-saghîru tawahhaja faj'atan |
Adding Surprising Details Later in the Sentence
You will also frequently see حتى placed later in the sentence to show that an action or situation extended to a surprising object or location. In these instances, it functions as a coordinator or a preposition, linking the unexpected noun back to the main clause.
| I walked everywhere, even into the abyss. | سرت في كل مكان، حتى الهوة.sirtu fî kulli makânin, hattâ al-huwwati. |
| I did not forget anything, not even the fossil. | لم أنس أي شيء، حتى الحفرية.lam ansa ayya shay'in, hattâ alhafriyyah. |
| The female guide found everything inside the cave, even the moss. | وجدت المرشدة كل شيء داخل الكهف حتى الطحلب.wajadat al-murshidatu kulla shay'in dâkhila al-kahfi hattâ at-tuhlubi |
