Past Tense Plural Suffixes
Talk about group actions by attaching plural suffixes to the past tense verb.
| Pronoun | Suffix | Example (فعل) |
|---|---|---|
| نحن (we) | نا | فعلنا |
| أنتم (you, pl.) | تم | فعلتم |
| هم (they) | وا | فعلوا |
The "We" Form
To talk about shared experiences, attach the suffix نا to the end of the verb.
| We studied history together yesterday. | درسنا التاريخ معا أمس.darasnâ t-târikha ma'an amsi. |
| We participated in a new project. | شاركنا في مشروع جديد.shârakna fî mashrû3in jadîd |
The Plural "You" Form
When addressing a group of people directly, use the suffix تم.
| Did you read the history of this civilization? | هل قرأتم تاريخ هذه الحضارة؟hal qara'tum târîkha hâdhihi l-hadâra? |
| Did you participate in the war? | هل شاركتم في الحرب؟hal shârak-tum fî l-harbi? |
The "They" Form
To describe historical events or collective actions done by others, add وا. The final ا in this suffix is always written but never pronounced.
| They built a large civilization. | بنوا حضارة كبيرة.banaw hadâratan kabîratan |
| They established a big project in the city. | أسسوا مشروعا كبيرا في المدينة.assasu mashrû'an kabîran fil-madîna |
Plural Verbs with Prepositions
Just like singular verbs, plural verbs are often paired with specific prepositions. Conjugate the verb for the group, then place the preposition directly after it.
| We celebrated peace after the war. | احتفلنا بالسلام بعد الحرب.ihtafalnâ bissalâmi ba'da alharbi. |
| They succeeded in the peace project. | نجحوا في مشروع السلام.najahoo fee mashroo'i as-salâm. |
