When describing overwhelming experiences—like a massive festival or a packed stadium—you often want to express that something was so intense that it caused a specific result. In Arabic, you can express this extent and result using the phrase لدرجة أن (to the extent that).
Attaching Pronouns to (أنّ)
Because this phrase ends with the conjunction أن (that), any pronoun immediately following it must be attached as a suffix. For example, "that we" becomes أننا, "that they" becomes أنهم, and "that I" becomes أنني.
You can place لدرجة أن directly after an adjective to mean "so [adjective] that..."
| The sound was so loud that we left the concert. | كان الصوت صاخبا لدرجة أننا غادرنا الحفلة.kâna as-sawtu sâkhiban lidarajati annanâ ghâdarnâ al-haflah |
| The stadium was so packed that we did not find a seat. | كان الملعب مكتظا لدرجة أننا لم نجد مقعدا.kâna al-mal'abu muktadhdhan lidarajati annanâ lam najid maq'adan |
Extent of an Action
You can also use this structure to describe the intensity of an action. By placing لدرجة أن after a verb phrase, it translates to doing something "so much that..." or "to the degree that..."
| The excited audience cheered so much that they lost their voices. | هتف الجمهور المتحمس لدرجة أنهم فقدوا أصواتهم.hatafa l-jumhuru l-mutahammisu lidarajati annahum faqadu aswatahum. |
| The artist engaged with the music so much that she cried. | تفاعلت الفنانة مع الموسيقى لدرجة أنها بكت.tafâ'alati l-fannânatu ma'a l-mûsîqâ lidarajati annahâ bakat |
Following (أنّ) with a Noun
If the result in the second half of the sentence features a stated noun as the subject (rather than a pronoun), you simply place that noun directly after أن.
| The concert was so loud that the ground shook under us! | كانت الحفلة صاخبة لدرجة أن الأرض اهتزت تحتنا!kânati l-haflatu sâkhibatan lidarajati anna l-arda ihtazzat tahtanâ! |
