Exclamations (ما أفعلَ)

When you encounter a breathtaking waterfall or a vast desert, you need the right words to express your awe. In Arabic, we use a specific grammatical structure called أسلوب التعجب (the exclamatory style) to say "How beautiful!" or "What a great...!"

The Exclamation Pattern (ما أفعل)

The standard formula for an exclamation is simple:

ما + أفعل + Noun

  • ما: The exclamatory particle (translating to "How" or "What a").
  • أفعل: The core exclamation word. It reshapes a normal adjective into this specific pattern. For example, the root for "beautiful" becomes أجمل. It shares the exact shape of comparative and superlative forms.
  • Noun: The object of your admiration.
how (exclamatory)
ماmâ

Let's see this formula in action. Notice how the adjective for beautiful takes the أجمل shape right after ما.

You can apply this pattern to almost any descriptive adjective to highlight nature's extremes. Observe the consistent shape of words like أكبر (how big) and أعظم (how great):

Pointing to the View

To exclaim about a specific thing right in front of you (e.g., "How wonderful this view is!"), place the demonstrative pronoun (هذا or هذه) right after your exclamation word, followed by the noun.

Adding Detail to Exclamations

You can make your exclamations even more descriptive by attaching relative clauses using الذي (that/which - masculine) or التي (that/which - feminine) to give more context about the place you are admiring.

Whether you are looking at a deep valley or a stunning sunset, this single pattern gives you all the tools you need to marvel at the world around you.
