Let's talk about VIP access and how to say "other than" or "except" using غير and سوى.
Exception Particles as Nouns
Unlike other exception words, غير and سوى are technically nouns. This creates two strict grammatical rules for how they behave in a sentence:
- The Excepted Item is Genitive: Because the particle is a noun, the word following it forms a possessive construction (idafa). Therefore, the excepted noun is always in the genitive case (مجرور), taking a kasra or the dual suffix ـين.
- The Particle Takes the Case: Because the following noun is locked in the genitive case, the particle itself steps in and takes the syntactic case that the excepted noun would have taken.
Because سوى ends in an alif maqsura (ى), its case endings are invisible.

| We do not give the secret code to anyone except the famous guests. | لا نعطي الرمز السري لأحد سوى الضيوف المشهورين.lâ nu'tî ar-ramza as-sirriyya li'ahadin siwâ ad-duyûfi al-mash'hûrîn |
However, غير shows standard case endings (such as fatha or kasra) depending on its grammatical role—like taking the accusative as an exception, or copying the case of a larger group as an apposition (بدل). Notice how غير changes its vowel in the examples below, while the word after it remains strictly genitive.

Seeing the endings
This course writes Arabic the way books and newspapers print it, without the short-vowel marks, so the ending this lesson is about is usually something you hear in the audio but cannot see in the drills. Here are some of them with every vowel written out:
| as written | fully vocalized | meaning |
|---|---|---|
| الحراس الصارمون لا يهتمون بشيء غير المظهر. | الحُرَّاسُ الصَّارِمُونَ لَا يَهْتَمُّونَ بِشَيْءٍ غَيْرَ المَظْهَرِ. | The strict guards do not care about anything other than appearance. |
| لا يفتحون المقصورة لأحد غير الذين يعرفون الرمز السري. | لَا يَفْتَحُونَ المَقْصُورَةَ لِأَحَدٍ غَيْرِ الَّذِينَ يَعْرِفُونَ الرَّمْزَ السِّرِّيَّ. | They do not open the VIP box for anyone except those who know the secret code. |
| لا يطلب النادي الحصري سوى شهرة. | لَا يَطْلُبُ النَّادِي الحَصْرِيُّ سِوَى شُهْرَةٍ. | The exclusive club requests nothing except fame. |
The word after غير and سوى is always genitive: المَظْهَرِ, شُهْرَةٍ. غير itself takes the case. In the first drill it is accusative, as an exception: غَيْرَ. In the second it copies لِأَحَدٍ as an apposition and is genitive: غَيْرِ. Both choices are correct in sentences like these. سوى never shows its case, even with every vowel written: سِوَى.
