Everyday Sounds and Noises

Learn to describe the sounds of nature, animals, and objects to add vivid detail to your stories.

Animal Sounds and the Idafa

Arabic uses specific vocabulary for the distinct noises that animals make. To express phrases like "the dog's barking" or "the bird's chirping," use the Idafa (genitive construction). Place the sound noun first, followed immediately by the animal noun.

The Sounds of Nature

Nature has its own dedicated vocabulary. The gentle rustling of leaves or trees is called حفيف, and the continuous murmuring of flowing water is خرير.

Booms, Buzzes, and Whistles

For louder, sharper, or mechanical sounds, Arabic features a descriptive set of nouns, frequently paired with their source using the Idafa construction:

  • دوي: a loud boom, echo, or rumble (like thunder or an explosion)
  • طنين: a high-pitched buzzing (like a bee or fly)
  • أزيز: a mechanical whizzing or humming (like an airplane or missile)
  • صفير: a whistling sound (often used for strong winds)
