Wills and Inheritances
When discussing the division of assets, you will use vocabulary related to wealth, wills, and inheritances.
| The grandfather left a great wealth. | ترك الجد ثروة كبيرة.taraka al-jaddu tharwatan kabîratan |
| The grandfather wrote a clear will. | كتب الجد وصية واضحة.kataba al-jaddu waSiyyatan wâDiHatan |
| The heir obtained his right from the inheritance. | حصل الوريث على حقه من الميراث.hasala al-warîthu 'alâ haqqihi mina al-mîrâthi. |
Basic Fractions
To express parts of a whole, Arabic uses specific nouns. With the exception of "half," basic fractions follow the pattern فُعْل.
| Fraction | Arabic |
|---|---|
| Half | نصف |
| Third | ثلث |
| Quarter | ربع |
Grammatically, fractions behave exactly like regular nouns. Place the fraction before a definite noun to form a standard Idafa (possessive) construction.
| Half of the inheritance is the girl's right. | نصف الميراث من حق البنت.nisfu al-mirathi min haqqi al-binti. |
Dividing Shares
Use fractions alongside the word for "share" (حصة) to detail how assets are split.
| The boy's share is half of the inheritance. | حصة الولد نصف الميراث.hissatu al-waladi nisfu al-mirâth |
| The wife's share is a quarter of the wealth. | حصة الزوجة ربع الثروة.hissatu az-zawjati rubu'u ath-tharwah |
Because fractions are standard nouns, they can serve any role in a sentence, such as the direct object of an action.
| The grandfather distributed a third of the money to the poor. | وزع الجد ثلث المال على الفقراء.wazza'a al-jaddu thulutha al-mâli 'alâ al-fuqarâ' |
| The brother read the will and left his share to his sister. | قرأ الأخ الوصية وترك حصته لأخته.qara'a al-akhu al-wasiyyata wa-taraka hissatahu li-ukhtihi. |
