Absolute Negative Pronouns
When investigating a mystery, you often need to describe empty spaces and vanished objects. To say "nobody" or "nothing" in Arabic, we use two absolute negative pronouns: لا أحد and لا شيء.
These are built using the absolute negation particle لا (meaning "absolutely no") followed by the words for "one" (أحد) or "thing" (شيء).
| nobody | لا أحدlâ aḥada |
| nothing | لا شيءlâ shay'a |
Describing Empty Spaces
You can use these pronouns in simple nominal (verbless) sentences to declare that a space is completely devoid of people or objects. Just place the pronoun where the subject of the sentence would normally go.
| There is nobody in the empty room. | لا أحد في الغرفة الفارغة.laa 'ahada fil-ghurfati l-fârighah |
| Nothing is visible in the dark house. | لا شيء مرئي في البيت المظلم.lâ shay'a mar'iyyun fi al-bayti al-muzhlim |
| The closet was empty, and there was nothing in it. | كانت الخزانة فارغة ولا شيء فيها.kânati l-khizânatu fârighatan wa lâ shay'a fîhâ. |
Using Negative Pronouns with Verbs
Just like in English, لا أحد and لا شيء can act as the subject of a verb. When you want to say that "nobody did" something or "nobody knows" something, simply place the negative pronoun before the verb. Since they are treated as singular concepts, the following verb will be conjugated in the default third-person singular masculine form.
| Nobody saw the ghost, but it is a suspicious mystery. | لا أحد رأى الشبح، لكنه لغز مريب.lâ ahada ra'â ash-shabaha, lâkinnahu lughzun murîbun |
| Nobody knows this suspicious mystery. | لا أحد يعرف هذا اللغز المريب.lâ ahada ya'rifu hâdha al-lughza al-murîb. |
The Complete Mystery
By combining these absolute negative pronouns, you can set the scene for a perfectly eerie, unsolved mystery where all traces have vanished.
| Nobody is in the room, nothing is visible, and there is no trace. | لا أحد في الغرفة، لا شيء مرئي، وليس هناك أثر.lâ ahada fî al-ghurfati, lâ shay'a mar'iyyun, wa laysa hunâka atharun |
