To express absolute impossibility, strong refutation, or that someone "would never" do something, Arabic uses the Lam of Denial (لام الجحود).
| would never (denial after negated past of 'to be') | لli |
This particle (ل) attaches directly to a present-tense verb and forces it into the subjunctive mood.
Crucially, the Lam of Denial must always be preceded by a negated past-tense form of "to be" (كان), such as ما كان or لم يكن (or their conjugations).
| The archivist would never tamper with the manuscript or damage it. | لم يكن أمين الأرشيف ليعبث بالمخطوطة أو يتلفها أبدا.lam yakun 'amînu l-'arshîfi liyabatha bil-makhtûtati aw yutlifahâ abadan. |
Notice the construction: the negated past "to be" (لم يكن), the subject (أمين الأرشيف), and the verb with the Lam of Denial (ليعبث) in the subjunctive mood.
| The researcher (f.) found a document containing ambiguity, and she would not have interpreted it without context. | وجدت الباحثة وثيقة تحتوي على غموض، وما كانت لتفسرها بدون سياق.wajadati al-bâhithatu wathîqatan tahtawî 'alâ ghumûdin, wa mâ kânat litufassirahâ bidûni siyâqin. |
The Lam of Denial emphasizes that an action is logically or morally impossible given the circumstances.
| The document was not original but rather fake, and the expert would never approve of this forgery. | لم تكن الوثيقة أصلية بل مزيفة، وما كان الخبير ليوافق على هذا التزوير.lam takuni l-wathîqatu asliyyatan bal muzayyafatan, wa mâ kâna l-khabîru liyuwâfiqa alâ hâdhâ t-tazwîri |
| The meaning would never be understood, and we would not deduce any significance from this torn margin. | لم يكن المعنى ليفهم، وما كنا لنستنبط أي دلالة من هذا الهامش الممزق.lam yakuni al-ma'nâ liyufhama, wamâ kunnâ linastanbiṭa ayya dalâlatin min hâdhâ al-hâmishi al-mumazzaqi. |
You can also use this structure in the first person (لم أكن):
| I would not have deduced any significance from this torn page. | لم أكن لأستنبط أي دلالة من هذه الصفحة الممزقة.lam akun li'astanbiṭa ayya dalâlatin min hâdhihi aṣ-ṣafḥati al-mumazzaqati |
Seeing the endings
This course writes Arabic the way books and newspapers print it, without the short-vowel marks, so the ending this lesson is about is usually something you hear in the audio but cannot see in the drills. Here are some of them with every vowel written out:
| as written | fully vocalized | meaning |
|---|---|---|
| لم يكن أمين الأرشيف ليعبث بالمخطوطة أو يتلفها أبدا. | لَمْ يَكُنْ أَمِينُ الأَرْشِيفِ لِيَعْبَثَ بِالمَخْطُوطَةِ أَوْ يُتْلِفَهَا أَبَدًا. | The archivist would never tamper with the manuscript or damage it. |
| لم تكن الوثيقة أصلية بل مزيفة، وما كان الخبير ليوافق على هذا التزوير. | لَمْ تَكُنِ الوَثِيقَةُ أَصْلِيَّةً بَلْ مُزَيَّفَةً، وَمَا كَانَ الخَبِيرُ لِيُوَافِقَ عَلَى هَذَا التَّزْوِيرِ. | The document was not original but rather fake, and the expert would never approve of this forgery. |
| لم أكن لأستنبط أي دلالة من هذه الصفحة الممزقة. | لَمْ أَكُنْ لِأَسْتَنْبِطَ أَيَّ دَلَالَةٍ مِنْ هَذِهِ الصَّفْحَةِ المُمَزَّقَةِ. | I would not have deduced any significance from this torn page. |
After this لـ the verb is subjunctive: its final damma becomes a fatha, لِيَعْبَثَ, لِيُوَافِقَ, لِأَسْتَنْبِطَ. You hear that fatha but never see it. A second verb joined by أو takes it too: يُتْلِفَهَا. With they the change shows in writing, because the ن drops: يوافقون → ما كانوا ليوافقوا.
