A Fishing Trip

This lesson introduces the specific vocabulary you will need for a fishing trip, from setting up your rod to describing your catch.

Heading to the Water

The Arabic word for "fishing" or "hunting" is صيد. You will often see it used in an Idafa (possession) phrase to describe everyday fishing equipment, such as a "fishing basket" or a "fishing net".

The Fishing Gear

Before casting a line, you need to prepare your gear. Key vocabulary for your tackle box includes the "rod" (قصبة), a "sinker" (ثقل) to weigh the line down, a "hook" (خطاف), and a "bobber" (عوامة) to watch for bites.

Catching and Pulling

Out on the water, the action revolves around the verbs اصطاد (to fish / to catch) and جر (to pull / to drag).

When talking about missed opportunities or hypothetical situations in the past, Arabic uses a specific "if... then" structure. To say "If [past], then [past]" for a condition that didn't actually happen, use the word لو for "if" and attach the prefix لـ directly to the result verb.

The Catch

When you finally catch a fish, you can describe its parts, such as its "fin" (زعنفة). Because this noun ends in a taa marbuuta (ة), it is grammatically feminine, so adjectives describing it will also be feminine.
