Vietnamese can highlight one person, thing, place, or reason with cleft-like frames containing là, mà, or both. A typical example is Chính Lan là người mà tôi gặp hôm qua “Lan is precisely the person I met yesterday.” The point is not simply to classify Lan; it is to select Lan from possible alternatives and identify her as the person fitting the description.
The label “là...mà focus constructions” is convenient but slightly misleading: Vietnamese does not have one inseparable là...mà bracket that fits every focus sentence. In người mà tôi gặp, mà introduces a modifying clause; in chính vì mưa mà..., it links a focused reason to its result; in không phải X mà là Y, the order is actually mà là. Learn the recurring frames and the information structure each creates.
These frames presuppose the ordinary predicate choices introduced on Property Predicates without a Copula and neighboring pages; focus does not replace those choices.
The main frames
| Frame | Job | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Chính X là người/cái/nơi (mà) ... | select X as the unique match | Chính Mai là người mà tôi cần gặp. |
| X chính là Y | reveal or strongly identify Y | Đây chính là vấn đề. |
| Chính vì/do/nhờ X mà Y | focus a cause, agentive cause, or enabling factor | Chính vì mưa mà trận đấu bị hoãn. |
| Không phải X mà là Y | reject X and replace it with Y | Không phải thứ Ba mà là thứ Tư. |
These are marked choices. A neutral clause simply reports; a focus construction answers an implicit contrast such as “Who?”, “Which one?”, or “Why exactly?”
Lan đã phát hiện ra lỗi.
Lan found the error. (neutral report)
Lan was precisely the person who found the error. (focused identification)
Selecting a person or thing
The frame chính X là người/cái/nơi ... foregrounds X, then supplies a description that X uniquely satisfies. Người is used for a person; cái/điều may package a thing or idea; nơi/chỗ packages a place. A following modifying clause may contain mà, but Vietnamese often allows it to be omitted when the relation is clear.
Nam is precisely the person the director wants to meet.
This is exactly the book I have been looking for all week.
That café is the place where we first met.
Compare người mà tôi gặp hôm qua with người tôi gặp hôm qua. Both can mean “the person I met yesterday.” Overt mà makes the modifying boundary explicit and can be useful in a longer phrase; omission is common in ordinary speech. Mà is not an English relative pronoun that must appear every time.
The focus does not conjugate the embedded predicate. Tôi gặp, cô ấy gặp, and họ gặp all use gặp. Past relevance can be signaled with đã, but time context may make even that unnecessary.
Focusing a reason
To emphasize the exact reason or enabling factor, Vietnamese commonly uses chính vì/do/nhờ X mà Y.
- vì presents a reason, often neutral or unfavorable;
- do presents a cause and is common in explanations (neutral/formal);
- nhờ presents a beneficial enabling factor.
Chính vì trời lạnh mà chúng tôi ở nhà.
It was precisely because it was cold that we stayed home.
It is precisely because of this error that the machine cannot run.
Chính nhờ chị Hoa mà tôi tìm được việc làm.
It was thanks specifically to Hoa that I found a job.
Notice that this causal frame normally has no là between the focused reason and mà. Adding English-shaped material such as it is because word for word makes the Vietnamese heavy or wrong. Chính supplies narrow focus, while mà introduces the consequence.
Correcting one alternative with another
Không phải X mà là Y means “not X but Y.” It explicitly rejects one proposed identity, time, place, or cause and replaces it. This frame is common in conversation and careful writing.
The person who just called wasn't Minh but Hà.
Cuộc họp không phải ở đây mà là ở tầng ba.
The meeting isn't here; it's on the third floor.
Tôi đi không phải vì bị ép mà vì thật sự muốn giúp.
I went not because I was forced, but because I genuinely wanted to help.
The last example corrects a reason and naturally omits là before the vì phrases. This demonstrates why không phải X mà là Y is a useful template, not an iron rule that every Y must follow là. Predicate type still matters.
The basic predicate system underneath focus
Focus packaging does not change which neutral predicate frame a clause selects.
| Neutral clause | Predicate type | Possible focused use |
|---|---|---|
| Tôi ăn cơm. | event | Chính tôi là người nấu cơm. |
| Cô ấy là giáo viên. | classification | Cô ấy chính là giáo viên mới. |
| Trời lạnh. | property | Chính vì trời lạnh mà tôi ở nhà. |
| Ở đây có Wi-Fi. | existence | Chính ở đây mới có Wi-Fi ổn định. |
The focused versions add selection, correction, or contrast. They do not make là a universal copula, and they do not alter the valency of ăn, có, or ở.
A natural dialogue
A: Ai tìm ra lỗi vậy? A: Lan ở nhóm kỹ thuật à?
A: Who found the error? B: Lan was the one who spotted it. A: Is Lan on the technical team? B: No, Lan isn't an engineer but the project manager. It was precisely because Lan understood the whole process that she spotted the problem before everyone else.
The dialogue moves through three kinds of focus: selecting Lan, correcting her role, and emphasizing the reason for her insight. None of the predicates changes form: phát hiện, hiểu, and thấy remain invariant.
Register and weight
Chính X là người... is neutral when a real contrast exists, but repeated clefts can sound heavy. In casual speech, Chính Lan phát hiện ra lỗi is often enough. Longer người mà... phrasing is useful when the descriptive clause is complex or when careful identification matters.
Chính do... mà... is common in explanatory or administrative prose (formal). Chính vì... mà... is neutral across speech and writing. Chính nhờ... mà... conventionally gives credit for a favorable result. Choose among them for meaning, not just variety.
Quick decision aid
- Selecting the one person or thing that fits a description? Use chính X là người/cái/nơi (mà)... or the shorter chính X + predicate.
- Revealing an identity? Use X chính là Y.
- Highlighting the exact cause? Use chính vì/do/nhờ X mà Y.
- Replacing a wrong alternative? Use không phải X mà (là) Y, keeping là only where Y's predicate type licenses it.
- Merely reporting new information with no contrast? Prefer the neutral clause.
Key Takeaways
- Là and mà occur in several related focus frames, not one universal paired construction.
- Use chính X là người/cái/nơi... to select a match and chính vì/do/nhờ X mà Y to focus a cause.
- Use không phải X mà (là) Y for correction, preserving the predicate frame appropriate to Y.
Common Mistakes
Incorrect — là mà cannot be inserted as an undivided focus pair.
Lan was precisely the person who found the error.
Mistake 2: copying an English relative pronoun mechanically.
❌ Đây là người mà cô ấy đã đến hôm qua.
Incorrect for 'the person she came to see'; đến does not take this person as a direct object.
✅ Đây là người mà cô ấy đến gặp hôm qua.
This is the person she came to see yesterday.
The repair uses the Vietnamese complement frame đến gặp + person rather than copying English come to someone.
Mistake 3: putting là into the causal frame.
❌ Chính vì trời lạnh là mà chúng tôi ở nhà.
Incorrect — the focused causal frame is chính vì X mà Y.
✅ Chính vì trời quá lạnh mà họ quyết định ở nhà.
It was precisely because it was so cold that they decided to stay home.
Mistake 4: inserting copular là before a focused property predicate.
Incorrect — bận is a property predicate, and this is not a valid causal focus frame.
✅ Chính vì chị ấy bận mà cuộc họp bị hoãn.
It was precisely because she was busy that the meeting was postponed.
Good focus grammar is not only structurally correct; it must answer a live question or contrast in the discourse.
