Existential Có with Locative Phrases

The pattern locative phrase + có + noun phrase tells the listener what is present, available, or happening in a place. Ở đây có Wi-Fi literally organizes the message as “at here—exists Wi-Fi”: the place sets the scene, có asserts presence, and the entity being introduced comes afterward. This is the ordinary Vietnamese counterpart of many English there is/are sentences.

The word order is not cosmetic. Máy in ở phòng bên locates a known printer, whereas Ở phòng bên có máy in introduces a printer as something available in the next room. Negative không có is left for Absence with Không Có.

The presentational pattern

The locative setting can be a general ở + place phrase or a more specific spatial phrase:

Ở đây có Wi-Fi miễn phí.

There is free Wi-Fi here.

Trong tủ lạnh có một ít trái cây.

There is some fruit in the refrigerator.

Trên bàn có hai bản hợp đồng cần ký.

There are two contracts on the table that need signing.

Gần ga có một quán phở mở cả đêm.

There is a pho restaurant near the station that stays open all night.

The place comes first because it functions as the discourse frame: “As for this location, what can be found there?” The noun phrase after có is often indefinite, quantified, or otherwise new: một ít trái cây, hai bản hợp đồng, một quán phở. Vietnamese does not insert a dummy equivalent of English there.

💡
Picture the clause as a camera move: establish the scene first, use có to open the inventory, then reveal the new person or thing. This explains both the order and the preference for new information after có.

Locating a known thing versus presenting a new thing

The central choice is whether the entity or the location is your starting point.

Communicative taskPatternExample
locate an identifiable entityentity + ở + placeMáy in ở phòng bên.
introduce an entity at a placeplace + có + entityỞ phòng bên có máy in.
assert existence with place latercó + entity + placeCó một máy in ở phòng bên.

Chiếc chìa khóa chính ở trong ngăn kéo bên trái.

The main key is in the left-hand drawer.

Trong ngăn kéo bên trái có một chiếc chìa khóa dự phòng.

There is a spare key in the left-hand drawer.

The first clause assumes that the listener can identify chìa khóa. The second introduces một chiếc chìa khóa dự phòng. English speakers often choose solely according to physical reality, but Vietnamese word order also reflects what is established and what is news.

The third pattern, Có một máy in ở phòng bên, is also natural. Beginning with có presents existence broadly; the final locative narrows where the entity is found. Fronting the location is especially natural when the place is already the current topic or when contrasting locations.

What counts as the locative frame

The setting need not begin with ở. Vietnamese has many spatial expressions that can frame an existential clause.

FrameExampleMeaning
ở đây / ở đóỞ đó có chỗ gửi xe.There is parking there.
trong + containerTrong hộp có pin. There are batteries in the box.
trên + surfaceTrên tường có bản đồ.There is a map on the wall.
dưới + landmarkDưới ghế có túi của anh.Your bag is under the chair.
gần / cạnh + landmarkGần đây có hiệu thuốc.There is a pharmacy nearby.

Notice that the English translation of Dưới ghế có túi của anh naturally uses “Your bag is under the chair” because the bag is identifiable. Vietnamese can still use the existential presentation when the speaker is announcing the discovery of the bag. Definiteness is therefore a strong tendency, not a mechanical ban: context and communicative purpose can present even an identifiable entity as newly noticed.

Time and event presentations

A time phrase can combine with, or sometimes replace, a physical locative frame. Events are treated as things scheduled or occurring in a setting.

Chiều nay ở hội trường có buổi giới thiệu sản phẩm.

There is a product presentation in the hall this afternoon.

Cuối tuần này trong công viên có lễ hội ẩm thực.

There is a food festival in the park this weekend.

Ngày mai sẽ có xe đến đón chúng ta ở khách sạn.

Tomorrow there will be a car coming to pick us up at the hotel.

The unchanged predicate có does not carry present, past, or future endings. Chiều nay, cuối tuần này, and ngày mai sẽ locate the situations. Đến keeps its destination-oriented meaning inside the relative-like sequence xe đến đón.

Existential có ordinarily presents a state of availability or an occurrence on a schedule. If the intended focus is an event of appearance, arrival, or discovery, Vietnamese can choose a more eventive lexical predicate: Một người lạ bước vào phòng “A stranger walked into the room,” Xe đã đến “The car has arrived.” Do not force có to mean every kind of coming into existence.

Questions and classifiers

A polar question can wrap the existential predicate in có ... không?:

Trong phòng có ổ cắm điện không?

Is there a power outlet in the room?

Be careful with ai after existential có. In a positive clause, có can license ai with the indefinite meaning “someone,” as in Có ai đang đợi ngoài cửa “Someone is waiting outside.” For a neutral polar question meaning “Is there anyone ...?”, include final không:

Ở quầy lễ tân có ai nói được tiếng Anh không?

Is there anyone at the reception desk who can speak English?

If the unknown person's identity is the question, make ai the interrogative topic or subject instead: Ở quầy lễ tân, ai nói được tiếng Anh? “Who at the reception desk can speak English?”

Classifiers are used according to the ordinary grammar of the noun phrase: một chiếc ghế, hai người, ba quyển sách, một cuộc họp. A bare noun is natural for a service, substance, category, or nonspecific availability: có Wi-Fi, có nước nóng, có chỗ ngồi. English a/an does not automatically require Vietnamese một, and Vietnamese classifier choice must follow the noun.

How the pattern fits the predicate system

Compare the core clause types:

TypeExampleCentral claim
eventTôi ăn cơm.what I do
identityCô ấy là giáo viên.what she is
propertyTrời lạnh.what the weather is like
possessionTôi có một câu hỏi.what I have
locationWi-Fi ở sảnh.where known Wi-Fi is available
existential presentationỞ đây có Wi-Fi.what is available here

No form conjugates. Yet the system is not vague: word order, predicate selection, lexical aspect, complements, and discourse status specify the relationship. Là cannot replace có, and ở cannot serve as the existential predicate simply because English uses a form of be.

A natural exchange

A: Trong khách sạn có chỗ nào yên tĩnh để làm việc không? B: Ở tầng hai có một phòng đọc. Trong đó có Wi-Fi và vài ổ cắm điện. A: Phòng đó ở đâu? B: Nó ở cạnh thang máy. Tôi thấy có người đang dùng, nhưng chắc vẫn còn chỗ. Nếu cửa bị khóa thì anh đến quầy lễ tân; họ sẽ mở được.

A: Is there anywhere quiet to work in the hotel? B: There is a reading room on the second floor. It has Wi-Fi and several power outlets. A: Where is that room? B: It is next to the lift. I saw that someone was using it, but there are probably still seats. If the door is locked, go to reception; they will be able to open it.

The room is first introduced after locative ở tầng hai có. Once it is identifiable as phòng đó, the reply locates it with nó ở cạnh thang máy. Làm việc, thấy, dùng, đến, and mở được keep their own complement patterns; bị khóa presents the door as adversely affected.

Quick decision aid

  1. Start with the place when it is the scene under discussion: Trong phòng ....
  2. Follow it with có when announcing what is present or available.
  3. Put the newly introduced person, thing, service, or event after có.
  4. If the entity is already the topic and only its location is unknown, use entity + ở + place instead.
  5. Use có + entity + place when existence is the broad focus and the location is supplementary.
  6. Keep có unchanged; express time and viewpoint with independent words and context.

Common Mistakes

1. Using subject-location order to answer an availability question.

❌ Wi-Fi ở đây?

Possible only as ‘Is the Wi-Fi here?’ about identifiable Wi-Fi; it is not the neutral availability question.

✅ Ở đây có Wi-Fi không?

Is there Wi-Fi here?

The corrected clause asks whether that service exists at the location.

2. Replacing có with là because English says ‘there is.’

❌ Trong phòng là một cái bàn.

Incorrect as a neutral existential sentence.

✅ Trong phòng có một cái bàn.

There is a table in the room.

Là identifies one nominal expression with another; có presents presence.

3. Treating ở as the existential predicate.

❌ Trên bàn ở hai bản hợp đồng.

Incorrect attempt to present two contracts on the table.

✅ Trên bàn có hai bản hợp đồng.

There are two contracts on the table.

The locative phrase is the setting; có is the predicate.

4. Copying English article use mechanically.

❌ Ở đây có một Wi-Fi miễn phí.

Unnatural: Wi-Fi as a service normally appears without numeral-classifier một.

✅ Ở đây có Wi-Fi miễn phí.

There is free Wi-Fi here.

Use Vietnamese noun-phrase grammar according to meaning, not an automatic equivalent of English a.

Key Takeaways

The existential-locative pattern is place + có + introduced entity. It presents a scene first and then says what can be found there. Invert the information structure when necessary: Máy in ở phòng bên locates a known printer; Ở phòng bên có máy in announces that a printer is available. The form có remains unchanged across persons and times, while noun-phrase form, lexical choices, and discourse context do the detailed work.
