Use ở when the conversation already has a person or thing in view and you want to say where that referent is, stays, lives, or is situated. Chị Lan ở văn phòng means “Lan is at the office”; ở văn phòng is the locative predicate. Vietnamese needs no equivalent of English be before it.
This page concentrates on subject + ở + place. When a place is the setting for introducing a new entity—Ở văn phòng có một máy in “There is a printer in the office”—the central predicate is existential có, treated on Existential Có with Locative Phrases.
The core locative pattern
The ordinary order is known subject + ở + location:
Chị Mai ở phòng họp tầng hai.
Mai is in the meeting room on the second floor.
Điện thoại của tôi ở trên bàn.
My phone is on the table.
Bố mẹ tôi ở Đà Nẵng.
My parents live in Da Nang.
The subject is normally identifiable: Mai, my phone, my parents. The phrase after ở supplies the missing location. Depending on the subject and context, English may translate ở as be at, be in, stay, or live. Vietnamese does not have to choose a different conjugated verb for each English wording.
Ở can mean be, stay, or live
Ở has a broad locative meaning. With a temporary time frame, it can describe where someone is or stays; with a stable biographical context, it can mean “live/reside.”
Tuần này tôi ở nhà chị gái vì phòng tôi đang sửa.
This week I'm staying at my sister's house because my room is being renovated.
Tôi ở Hà Nội từ năm 2018.
I have lived in Hanoi since 2018.
Anh ở đây đợi tôi nhé; tôi đi lấy xe.
Wait here for me; I'll go get the car.
The third example gives ở an activity-like instruction, “stay/remain here.” Ở lại makes the idea of remaining explicit: Anh ở lại đây nhé. The basic location use, however, is stative. Aspect and temporal words can frame that state without changing ở itself.
Ở does not conjugate
Vietnamese uses the same form with every subject and time reference:
| Context | Example | What supplies the reading |
|---|---|---|
| present/current | Bây giờ cô ấy ở thư viện. | bây giờ |
| past residence | Năm ngoái cô ấy ở Huế. | năm ngoái |
| temporary ongoing stay | Cô ấy đang ở Huế. | đang highlights the current interval |
| future location | Ngày mai cô ấy sẽ ở nhà. | ngày mai, sẽ |
Năm ngoái chúng tôi ở gần ga, nên đi làm rất tiện.
Last year we lived near the station, so getting to work was very convenient.
Ngày mai tôi sẽ ở văn phòng đến sáu giờ.
Tomorrow I'll be at the office until six.
No agreement ending distinguishes tôi ở, cô ấy ở, and chúng tôi ở. No past ending appears in năm ngoái ... ở. Vietnamese builds time and viewpoint with independent expressions and context.
Location, destination, and source are different
Ở expresses a location where a person or thing is situated. Movement toward a destination commonly uses đến or đi, not locative ở as an English-style preposition.
Tôi đang ở công ty; lát nữa tôi đi siêu thị rồi về nhà.
I'm at work; in a little while I'll go to the supermarket and then go home.
Xe buýt đã đến bến, còn anh Nam vẫn ở nhà.
The bus has arrived at the station, while Nam is still at home.
In ở công ty, the office is a current location. In đi siêu thị, the supermarket is a destination. In đến bến, the station is the endpoint of arrival. English uses at/to and a conjugated be/go/arrive; Vietnamese predicates have their own lexical complement frames.
For a source, Vietnamese commonly uses từ: Tôi từ Huế đến “I came from Hue,” or more naturally with fuller context, Tôi đến từ Huế “I come from Hue.” Do not make ở carry every spatial relation.
Known subject versus presented entity
Compare these two orders:
| Clause | What is already under discussion? | What is asserted? |
|---|---|---|
| Máy in ở phòng bên. | the printer | its location: in the next room |
| Ở phòng bên có máy in. | the next room as a setting | a printer is available there |
Nhà vệ sinh ở cuối hành lang.
The restroom is at the end of the corridor.
Ở cuối hành lang có một nhà vệ sinh.
There is a restroom at the end of the corridor.
Both sentences can describe the same world, but they answer different questions. The first locates an identifiable restroom. The second introduces a restroom into the discourse. English uses be in both; Vietnamese uses ở versus có to make the information structure explicit.
Ở as a locative introducer inside a larger clause
The sequence ở + place can also modify an event or a noun rather than serving as the main predicate.
Tôi gặp cô ấy ở nhà ga sáng nay.
I met her at the station this morning.
Here the main predicate is gặp “meet,” and ở nhà ga locates the meeting. In người ở phòng bên “the person in the next room,” the locative phrase helps identify a noun. The surface form is the same, so identify what the whole clause is asserting.
This flexibility does not make ở a meaningless copy of English at/in. Vietnamese choices depend on the predicate. Đến Hà Nội “arrive in Hanoi” and đi Hà Nội “go to Hanoi” ordinarily take their destination directly; mechanically inserting ở would change or break the frame.
No là before a location or property
The basic Vietnamese predicate inventory is compact but sharply differentiated:
| Meaning | Pattern | Example |
|---|---|---|
| action | event predicate | Tôi ăn cơm. |
| nominal identity | là + noun phrase | Cô ấy là giáo viên. |
| property | property predicate directly | Trời lạnh. |
| possession | possessor + có + item | Tôi có một câu hỏi. |
| existence at place | place + có + entity | Ở đây có Wi-Fi. |
| location of subject | subject + ở + place | Điện thoại ở đây. |
Là is not an auxiliary placed before every nonverbal-looking predicate. Điện thoại là ở đây is possible only as a marked focus-like correction in a special context (“It is here that the phone is”), not as the neutral way to locate the phone.
A natural exchange
A: Chị Hương ở đâu? B: Chị ấy đang ở phòng bên, làm việc với khách hàng. A: Anh có thấy dây cáp máy in không? B: Nó ở trên bàn. Nếu không thấy thì hỏi anh Bình; anh ấy vừa đi họp nhưng khoảng hai giờ sẽ đến. A: Máy in có dùng được không? B: Có, nhưng hôm qua nó bị kẹt giấy.
A: Where is Huong? B: She's in the next room, working with a client. A: Have you seen the printer cable? B: It's on the table. If you don't see it, ask Binh; he has just gone to a meeting but will arrive around two. A: Can the printer be used? B: Yes, but yesterday it had a paper jam.
The exchange uses ở to locate a known person and object. Đi, đến, and làm việc describe events; có ... không frames questions; dùng được expresses usability, and bị presents an adverse problem. None of these predicates carries subject agreement or tense endings.
Quick decision aid
- Is the subject already identifiable, and is its location the new information? Use subject + ở + place.
- Are you introducing something as available at a place? Use place + có + entity.
- Is the place a destination? Use the lexical frame of đi, đến, or another movement predicate; do not insert ở automatically.
- Does ở + place merely tell where another event happens? Then it is an event-locating phrase, not the main predicate.
- Are you identifying a class or role? Use là, not ở.
- Is the intended meaning past or future? Keep ở unchanged and add context, time phrases, or independent temporal words as needed.
Common Mistakes
1. Adding là before a neutral locative predicate.
❌ Chị Mai là ở văn phòng.
Incorrect as a neutral statement of Mai's location.
✅ Chị Mai ở văn phòng.
Mai is at the office.
Ở văn phòng can predicate location directly. Là would create a marked contrastive structure, not ordinary location.
2. Using ở when có is needed to introduce an entity.
❌ Ở đây ở Wi-Fi miễn phí.
Incorrect attempt to say that free Wi-Fi is available here.
✅ Ở đây có Wi-Fi miễn phí.
There is free Wi-Fi here.
Ở locates a subject; existential có introduces the available service.
3. Copying English to as ở after a movement predicate.
❌ Tôi đi ở siêu thị sau giờ làm.
Incorrect for the intended destination meaning ‘go to the supermarket.’
✅ Tôi đi siêu thị sau giờ làm.
I go to the supermarket after work.
Neutral đi + destination does not require ở.
4. Inventing a past form of ở.
❌ Năm ngoái tôi ở-đã Huế.
Incorrect: ở does not take a past-tense ending.
✅ Năm ngoái tôi ở Huế.
Last year I lived in Hue.
The time phrase gives the past reading. A separate đã is not an ending and is not obligatory here.
Key Takeaways
Ở forms a locative predicate when a known subject comes first and a place follows. It can be translated as “be at/in,” “stay,” or “live,” but its form never conjugates. Do not insert là before it. Keep location apart from destination, and distinguish Máy in ở phòng bên “The printer is in the next room” from presentational Ở phòng bên có máy in “There is a printer in the next room.”
