Viết: Write and Spell

Vietnamese viết covers producing written language: writing a note, composing an article, authoring a book, putting an idea into words, and giving the written form of a name. It can answer both “what did someone write?” and, in tên này viết thế nào?, “how is this name spelled?” Yet English write, write down, write to, and spell do not all map to the same bare frame.

The predicate never conjugates. Vietnamese locates and shapes the writing event through đang viết, đã viết, viết xong, viết hết, viết lại, and viết ra, while complements identify text, recipient, topic, language, medium, or reported content. The next reference page treats mua “buy” and procurement; this page stays with producing and representing written language.

Text, genre, and authorship

A direct complement names the written product: viết thư, viết bài, viết báo cáo, viết tiểu thuyết, viết mã “write code.” With a genre, viết văn means write prose/compositions and can refer broadly to literary writing; làm thơ is the usual collocation for composing poetry, though viết thơ is also possible.

Cô ấy đang viết báo cáo đánh giá tác động môi trường.

She is writing an environmental impact assessment report. (professional)

Cuốn tiểu thuyết này được viết trong thời gian tác giả sống ở Huế.

This novel was written while the author was living in Huế.

Authorship and the physical act can diverge. Do Nguyễn An viết attributes a text to Nguyễn An; chấp bút can mean draft or put into polished written form for another person (formal/professional) and may imply ghostwriting depending on context. Soạn/soạn thảo emphasizes preparing a document (formal/administrative); ghi/ghi lại emphasizes recording information rather than crafting a text.

Dự thảo do nhóm pháp lý soạn, còn phần mở đầu do giám đốc tự viết.

The draft was prepared by the legal team, while the director wrote the introduction herself. (professional)

💡
Use viết for producing wording, ghi/ghi lại for recording information, and soạn thảo for preparing an official document. English write down does not force a literal directional translation.

Recipient, audience, and publication

For correspondence, the written object normally remains explicit: viết thư/email cho ai “write a letter/email to someone.” When the genre is obvious, viết cho ai can mean write to or write something for that person, but it may also mean compose on their behalf. Context decides whether cho marks recipient or beneficiary.

Từ ngày đi xa, tuần nào ông cũng viết thư cho các cháu.

Since going away, he has written to his grandchildren every week.

Chị viết giúp tôi một lời giới thiệu ngắn được không?

Could you write a short introduction for me?

Viết cho + newspaper/site/audience can mean contribute to that outlet or write for that readership. Viết gửi + outlet/person foregrounds submission or transmission. Modern casual communication often uses nhắn tin cho ai “message someone” rather than forcing viết to cover every English use of write someone.

Anh từng viết cho một tạp chí khoa học phổ thông.

He used to write for a popular-science magazine.

Topic, language, instrument, and content clause

Use viết về + topic for “write about.” Viết bằng + language specifies the linguistic medium; viết bằng + instrument/material can also specify means, as in viết bằng bút chì. Viết trên giấy/trên bảng locates the inscription surface.

Bài này viết về ký ức của những người rời quê sau chiến tranh.

This article is about the memories of people who left their homeland after the war.

Đơn phải được viết bằng tiếng Việt và ký bằng mực xanh.

The application must be written in Vietnamese and signed in blue ink. (formal)

Written propositional content can follow viết rằng + clause, especially in formal reporting. Viết là + clause is common in conversational reporting, while a colon and quotation can introduce exact wording. Omitting the complementizer is possible where the boundary is clear.

Trong thư, bà viết rằng bà sẽ trở về vào đầu tháng sáu.

In the letter, she wrote that she would return at the beginning of June.

Trong tin nhắn, cô ấy viết là cuộc họp đã chuyển sang phòng 302.

In the message, she wrote that the meeting had moved to room 302. (informal/neutral)

Do not confuse the human writer with the text as information source. Báo viết rằng... is metonymic and natural: “the newspaper writes/reports that.” In academic prose, tác giả lập luận/cho rằng... may identify the intellectual act more precisely than repeating viết rằng.

Spelling and written form

When someone has heard a name or word and needs its orthographic form, ask ...viết thế nào?, ...viết ra sao?, or ...viết bằng chữ gì? depending on context. Tên anh viết thế nào? naturally means “How do you spell your name?” Đánh vần means spell out letter by letter or sound by sound, often as a pedagogical or repair strategy.

Xin lỗi, họ của chị viết thế nào ạ?

Excuse me, how do you spell your surname? (polite)

Bạn đánh vần chậm, từng chữ cái một, giúp tôi được không?

Could you spell it out slowly, one letter at a time, for me?

Viết đúng chính tả means spell/write correctly. Sai chính tả means contain a spelling error. For a displayed written form whose pronunciation is unknown, ask đọc thế nào, not viết thế nào; see đọc and pronunciation.

💡
Direction matters: after hearing a word, ask viết thế nào? for its spelling; while looking at a written word, ask đọc thế nào? for its pronunciation; ask đánh vần when you want the sequence articulated.

Result and directional elements

Viết ra externalizes words or thoughts: put it into writing. It can also mean successfully produce an answer or name a word. Viết lại is structurally ambiguous between write again and rewrite; context or an added manner expression resolves it. Viết lại cho rõ means rewrite more clearly, whereas viết lại địa chỉ một lần nữa may simply repeat the address.

Nếu khó nói trực tiếp, em thử viết suy nghĩ của mình ra giấy.

If it is hard to say directly, try putting your thoughts down on paper.

Đoạn kết còn yếu; anh nên viết lại cho chặt chẽ hơn.

The conclusion is still weak; you should rewrite it more coherently.

Viết xong completes a bounded writing task. Viết hết can mean write all of the intended material or use up the available space/ink, so its complement and context matter. Viết được expresses ability, successful production, or quantity achieved.

Tôi viết xong bản đề xuất rồi, chỉ còn kiểm tra số liệu.

I have finished writing the proposal; only the figures remain to be checked.

Trong hai giờ, cô ấy viết được gần ba nghìn từ.

In two hours, she managed to write nearly three thousand words.

Aspect and time reference

Đang viết presents the writing process; đã viết locates a writing event before the reference point; từng viết marks experience; chưa viết says an expected text has not yet been produced. Đã viết does not itself mean “finished writing,” and it does not guarantee that the text was sent, published, or accepted.

Tôi đã viết email nhưng chưa gửi.

I have written the email but have not sent it.

Nhà nghiên cứu này từng viết nhiều bài về ngôn ngữ học xã hội.

This researcher has written many articles on sociolinguistics. (academic)

The frame identifies the writing event

— Chị đang viết gì thế? — Tôi viết một bài về y tế nông thôn cho tạp chí. Biên tập viên bảo tôi viết lại phần mở đầu. — Tên tạp chí viết thế nào? — Để tôi viết ra cho anh xem.

— What are you writing? — I'm writing an article about rural healthcare for a magazine. The editor told me to rewrite the introduction. — How is the magazine's name spelled? — Let me write it down for you to see.

The direct object names the product, về marks its topic, cho identifies the outlet, viết lại means revise in this editorial context, viết thế nào requests spelling, and viết ra produces a visible form. These are constructional differences, not conjugated senses of the verb.

Common Mistakes

1. Treating a person as a direct object because English allows “write someone.” Name the message or use a communication predicate.

❌ Tôi sẽ viết bạn khi đến nơi.

Unnatural calque of ‘I'll write you’ — bạn looks like the thing being written.

✅ Tôi sẽ nhắn tin cho bạn khi đến nơi.

I'll message you when I arrive.

2. Copying English “write down” as viết xuống. Use viết ra or ghi lại for recording.

❌ Hãy viết xuống số điện thoại của tôi.

Unnatural directional transfer from English ‘write down.’

✅ Hãy ghi lại số điện thoại của tôi.

Write down my phone number.

3. Using trong for the language of composition. The established frame uses bằng + language.

❌ Báo cáo được viết trong tiếng Việt.

Incorrect transfer of English ‘written in Vietnamese.’

✅ Báo cáo được viết bằng tiếng Việt.

The report is written in Vietnamese.

4. Assuming đã viết means sent or completed. State the actual endpoint.

❌ Tôi đã viết email nên khách hàng chắc chắn đã nhận được.

Faulty inference — writing does not entail sending or receipt.

✅ Tôi đã viết xong và gửi email cho khách hàng.

I finished writing and sent the email to the client.

5. Asking for spelling with đọc thế nào. That asks how a visible form is pronounced.

❌ Tôi nghe tên chị rồi; tên chị đọc thế nào?

Wrong direction — the name was heard, so the missing information is its written form.

✅ Tôi nghe tên chị rồi; tên chị viết thế nào?

I heard your name; how is it spelled?

Key Takeaways

  • Map viết + text, viết...cho, viết về, viết bằng, and viết rằng/là as distinct frames.
  • Viết thế nào asks for orthographic form; đánh vần requests the sequence to be spelled out.
  • Viết ra, viết lại, viết xong, and viết được add externalization, repetition/revision, completion, and ability/result.
  • A completed writing event does not entail sending or publication, and English write does not license a bare person object in Vietnamese.
