Vietnamese mua names an acquisition in exchange for money or another agreed value. Its form never conjugates: the same mua appears in a routine purchase, a completed procurement, and a future plan. What changes is the construction around it—who acquires what, from whom, for whom, at what price, and with what result.
That construction map is more useful than an English-style verb chart. English speakers must not assume that every particle in buy from, buy for, or buy up has one fixed Vietnamese equivalent. This page focuses on mua and acquisition; the seller's perspective belongs on bán and price frames.
A construction map for mua
| Frame | Communicative value | Typical phrase |
|---|---|---|
| mua + object | acquire goods, a service, or a right | mua vé tàu |
| mua + object + ở + place/channel | identify the shopping location or channel | mua rau ở chợ |
| mua + object + của + seller | identify a person or entity as the seller | mua xe của một người bạn |
| mua + object + cho + recipient | buy something for someone | mua thuốc cho bố |
| mua + object + với giá + amount | state the transaction price | mua với giá hai triệu đồng |
| mua được / mua hết / mua lại | successful acquisition / buy all / buy back or buy again | mua được vé; mua lại căn nhà |
| thu mua / mua vào | organized purchasing or intake | thu mua nông sản; mua ngoại tệ vào |
The direct object can be a physical item, a service, access, or a legally transferable right: mua nhà, mua bảo hiểm, mua vé, mua bản quyền. Vietnamese normally leaves number and definiteness to context, classifiers, or quantifiers rather than altering mua.
Every morning she buys coffee to take to the office.
Công ty vừa mua bản quyền sử dụng phần mềm trong ba năm.
The company has just purchased the right to use the software for three years. (business/formal)
Place, seller, recipient, and price
Use ở for the place or channel where the purchase happens: mua ở chợ, mua ở hiệu sách, mua trên mạng. Use của when a particular person or organization is construed as the source or seller. In formal procurement prose, từ can mark an institutional supplier, but it is not a universal translation of English from.
I bought this table from a family that is about to move.
The equipment was purchased from the supplier that won the tender. (formal procurement)
For a beneficiary, cho + recipient can follow the thing purchased, or a short recipient may come immediately after mua cho. Tôi mua cho mẹ một chiếc khăn and Tôi mua một chiếc khăn cho mẹ are both natural; the first organizes the message around the recipient, while the second first identifies the item.
On your way back, please buy two baguette sandwiches for me.
Here giúp turns the purchase into a favor. It does not mean that the recipient literally helps perform the buying.
Price is commonly introduced by với giá, especially in careful prose, or expressed more compactly after the object in commercial conversation. Mua bao nhiêu? can ask either quantity or price, so mua với giá bao nhiêu? is clearer when the price itself matters.
They bought that apartment for ten percent less than the listed price.
Results, direction, and procurement
Mua được says that acquisition was successfully achieved, often despite scarcity or difficulty. Mua hết means to buy all of an available quantity; in context, it can also say an item has sold out from the buyer's viewpoint. Mua lại is genuinely ambiguous between buying something again and buying it back. Context or an explicit former owner resolves the reading.
May quá, tôi mua được hai vé cho chuyến cuối.
Luckily, I managed to buy two tickets for the last departure.
Nhà hàng đã mua hết số rau hữu cơ mà trang trại thu hoạch sáng nay.
The restaurant bought all the organic vegetables the farm harvested this morning.
After many years, she bought back her childhood home.
In trade and finance, mua vào contrasts with bán ra: a business takes goods, gold, or currency into its holdings. Thu mua suggests organized collection from producers or dispersed sellers. Both are more specialized than everyday mua.
The bank lists separate buying and selling rates for each currency. (financial)
Hợp tác xã thu mua cà phê trực tiếp từ các hộ nông dân nhỏ lẻ.
The cooperative procures coffee directly from smallholder farmers. (business/formal)
Mua sắm describes shopping or purchasing activity, often involving several items. Mua bán means trade or buying and selling. In the idiom mua may bán đắt, people wish a merchant lucky purchasing and brisk, profitable sales; it is not a literal instruction about price.
Ngày khai trương, bạn bè chúc chủ quán mua may bán đắt.
On opening day, friends wished the shop owner prosperous trade. (idiomatic)
Aspect and time without conjugation
Markers locate the stable form mua in discourse. Đã mua presents the acquisition as prior or realized; đang mua normally describes the shopping or transaction in progress; sẽ mua presents a projected purchase; vừa/mới mua presents a recent one; chưa mua được combines non-achievement with the successful-result complement được.
I've bought the machine already, so I no longer need to rent one.
Phòng vật tư đang mua thêm khẩu trang cho bệnh viện.
The supplies department is procuring additional masks for the hospital.
Chúng tôi vẫn chưa mua được linh kiện đúng tiêu chuẩn.
We still haven't managed to procure components that meet the standard.
With a durable possession, mua rồi highlights a completed change of ownership whose result matters now. It is not mechanically equivalent to every English present perfect; a past-time adverbial may make simple đã mua or even unmarked mua more natural. For the wider system, see present relevance and current-state inference.
A five-way contrast
| Function | Vietnamese | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| affirmative | Tôi mua rau ở chợ đầu ngõ. | I buy vegetables at the market at the end of the lane. |
| negative | Hôm nay tôi không mua thịt. | I'm not buying meat today. |
| question | Bạn mua chiếc máy này ở đâu? | Where did you buy this machine? |
| aspect-marked | Chúng tôi vừa mua được lô hàng cuối cùng. | We have just managed to buy the final lot. |
| idiomatic collocation | Chúc cửa hàng mua may bán đắt. | May the shop buy well and sell briskly. |
The frame changes the interpretation
— Phòng mình đã mua máy in chưa?
— Has our department bought a printer yet? — Yes, but we bought it from the Da Nang branch; it wasn't procured from the new supplier. They transferred us equipment that was still in good condition at an internal price.
Mua của chi nhánh construes the branch as the party transferring ownership. Mua từ nhà cung cấp evokes an institutional supply chain. The choice changes how the source participates in the transaction even though English can use buy from for both.
Common Mistakes
1. Copying English “buy from a place” with của. Của normally points to the seller or owner; ở is the neutral choice for a shopping location.
❌ Tôi mua thuốc của hiệu thuốc gần nhà.
Awkward if the pharmacy is merely the place—của makes it sound like the pharmacy is being foregrounded as owner or seller.
✅ Tôi mua thuốc ở hiệu thuốc gần nhà.
I buy medicine at the pharmacy near my home.
2. Adding an English-like purposive preposition before the item. The purchased thing is a direct object; cho introduces the beneficiary.
❌ Tôi mua cho một chiếc áo mới.
Incorrect—cho cannot introduce the thing being purchased.
I bought a new shirt for my younger sister.
3. Treating mua được as a simple past form. Được contributes successful attainment, not past time by itself.
Misleading if the purchase was entirely routine—được unnecessarily suggests success despite an obstacle.
✅ Hôm qua tôi mua sữa ở cửa hàng như mọi ngày.
Yesterday I bought milk at the shop as usual.
4. Translating “purchase from suppliers” with one casual frame in formal procurement. Institutional prose often uses mua từ, thu mua, or a passive construction depending on focus.
Unnatural institutional phrasing; nguồn cung is not naturally cast as a personal owner with của here.
The company procures raw materials from multiple sources. (formal/business)
Key Takeaways
- Mua remains unchanged; aspect markers and time expressions locate the acquisition.
- Use ở for location, của/từ for a seller or source, cho for a beneficiary, and với giá for price.
- Result and direction matter: mua được, mua hết, mua lại, mua vào, and thu mua are distinct constructions.
- Learn commercial and idiomatic collocations as units rather than translating English particles one by one.
