Tens, Hundreds, and Positional Lẻ

Vietnamese numbers are built by stating place values in descending order. Once you know the digits, tens use mười/mươi, hundreds use trăm, and a missing tens digit inside a hundred may be announced with lẻ or linh. The system is regular, but the linking word is communicatively important: một trăm lẻ năm is 105, not 150. This page develops tens, hundreds, and the zero-tens position; the forms mốt, tư, and lăm receive their full treatment on Mốt, Tư, and Lăm after Tens.

Build the tens from left to right

Ten is mười. From twenty onward, use digit + mươi and then add the units digit if it is not zero.

NumberStructureVietnamese
10tenmười
12ten + twomười hai
20two × tenhai mươi
23two × ten + threehai mươi ba
30three × tenba mươi
48four × ten + eightbốn mươi tám
90nine × tenchín mươi

The vowel and tone distinguish mười “ten” from mươi, the multiplier used after another digit. They are not interchangeable spellings.

Xe buýt đến sau mười phút.

The bus arrives in ten minutes.

Xe buýt số hai mươi đến sau mười hai phút.

Bus number 20 arrives in twelve minutes.

Lớp này có ba mươi học sinh.

This class has thirty students.

The numeral is built first, and a classifier or directly countable noun follows the complete numeral: hai mươi ba cái ghế, not a classifier inserted between hai mươi and ba.

Phòng họp có hai mươi ba cái ghế.

The meeting room has twenty-three chairs.

Add hundreds with trăm

Hundreds follow the pattern digit + trăm. If tens and units follow, say them after the hundreds phrase.

NumberVietnameseInternal pattern
100một trămone hundred
110một trăm mườione hundred + ten
123một trăm hai mươi baone hundred + two tens + three
200hai trămtwo hundreds

Khách sạn cách ga khoảng hai trăm mét.

The hotel is about two hundred metres from the station.

Hội trường có ba trăm bốn mươi tám chỗ ngồi.

The auditorium has 348 seats.

English inserts and in some varieties (“one hundred and twenty-three”). Vietnamese does not use và inside an ordinary cardinal. Place-value words already show the structure.

Lẻ and linh fill an empty tens position

When a number contains hundreds and a nonzero units digit but has zero tens, careful reading inserts a linking form before the final digit:

NumberWith lẻWith linh
101một trăm lẻ mộtmột trăm linh một
105một trăm lẻ nămmột trăm linh năm
207hai trăm lẻ bảyhai trăm linh bảy
909chín trăm lẻ chínchín trăm linh chín

Linh is especially associated with (regional: Northern) speech, while lẻ is especially associated with (regional: Southern) speech and is widely understood. Both occur in standard number reading. Match the variety and surrounding usage rather than mixing them unpredictably in one carefully read figure.

Hóa đơn là một trăm lẻ năm nghìn đồng.

The bill is 105,000 đồng.

Bài đọc bắt đầu ở trang hai trăm linh bảy.

(regional: Northern) The reading begins on page 207.

The linker does not mean English and generally. It specifically signals that the tens position has been skipped. Compare một trăm lẻ năm “105” with một trăm năm mươi “150.”

💡
Listen for the order after trăm. Lẻ/linh + digit means the final digit occupies the units place; digit + mươi begins a full tens phrase.

In fast (informal) speech, speakers may shorten a number when context makes the value obvious. For learning, transactions, measurements, and dictation, the full form with lẻ/linh is safer because it protects the zero tens position.

When not to use lẻ

Do not use lẻ when the number ends at an exact hundred, when a nonzero tens phrase follows, or as a substitute for the decimal marker.

Giá niêm yết là hai trăm nghìn đồng.

The listed price is 200,000 đồng.

Tổng cộng là hai trăm mười nghìn đồng.

The total is 210,000 đồng.

Decimals use phẩy, not positional lẻ: ba phẩy năm is 3.5. “Odd number” and “retail/single units” can also involve lexical lẻ, but those are different meanings from the linking form on this page.

Positional variants: recognize the pattern

Three unit digits need attention after tens:

NumberNatural readingRelevant variant
15mười lămnăm → lăm
21hai mươi mốtmột → mốt
34ba mươi tưbốn → tư

These variants belong to a pronounced tens environment. After lẻ/linh, use the basic digit: 105 is một trăm lẻ năm, not một trăm lẻ lăm. The next page explains the full distribution, including why 11 is mười một but 21 is hai mươi mốt.

The same numeral inside different constructions

A cardinal's surrounding frame determines its communicative job.

ExpressionInterpretation
hai mươi mốtthe cardinal 21
ba mươi tưthe cardinal 34
mười lămthe cardinal 15
thứ haisecond; or Monday in a calendar frame
ngày 7 tháng 10October 7
tám giờ rưỡi8:30

Ordinal thứ, date units ngày/tháng, and time unit giờ do grammatical work that bare digits cannot. Likewise, hai trăm lẻ năm nghìn đồng is a money amount because nghìn đồng supplies scale and currency. Duration uses a time unit, as in một trăm lẻ năm phút “105 minutes.” Calendrical cycles can use the same cardinals with ngày, tháng, and năm.

Khóa học kéo dài một trăm lẻ năm giờ trong ba tháng.

The course lasts 105 hours over three months.

A natural checkout correction

— Tổng cộng một trăm lẻ năm nghìn đồng phải không? — Không, một trăm năm mươi nghìn. Anh nghe thiếu tiếng mươi rồi. — À, 150.000 đồng. Tôi hiểu rồi.

— The total is 105,000 đồng, right? — No, 150,000. You missed the word mươi. — Ah, 150,000 đồng. I understand now.

The contrast rests on place value: lẻ năm fills an empty tens slot and gives 105, while năm mươi explicitly gives five tens and therefore 150. In payment, addresses, and room numbers, that small word can prevent a consequential misunderstanding.

Common Mistakes

1. Using mười after a multiplier

❌ hai mười ba

Incorrect for 23: mười is the standalone word ten, not the multiplier after hai.

✅ hai mươi ba

twenty-three

After hai through chín, use mươi.

2. Omitting the zero-tens linker in careful reading

❌ một trăm năm

Ambiguous or nonstandard for a learner intending an explicit reading of 105.

✅ một trăm lẻ năm

one hundred and five (105)

The full form protects the place-value structure. In (regional: Northern) usage, một trăm linh năm is equally systematic.

3. Copying English and inside the cardinal

❌ một trăm và hai mươi

English-driven for 120: Vietnamese does not normally insert và inside the cardinal.

✅ một trăm hai mươi

one hundred and twenty (120)

Và coordinates phrases; it is not the ordinary number linker.

4. Using lăm after lẻ

❌ hai trăm lẻ lăm

Incorrect for 205: lăm requires a preceding tens expression.

✅ hai trăm lẻ năm

two hundred and five (205)

With no pronounced tens, the basic digit năm returns.

5. Putting the classifier inside the numeral

❌ hai mươi cái ba ghế

Incorrect word order: the complete cardinal must come before the classifier.

✅ hai mươi ba cái ghế

twenty-three chairs

Build hai mươi ba first; then attach cái ghế.

Key Takeaways

  • Ten is mười; multiples from twenty onward use digit + mươi.
  • Hundreds use digit + trăm, followed by tens and units from left to right.
  • Lẻ or linh announces an empty tens position between a hundred and a final units digit.
  • Positional mốt, tư, and lăm depend on a tens environment; after lẻ/linh, use the basic digit.
  • Build the whole cardinal before adding a classifier, noun, currency, date unit, or time unit.
