Vietnamese builds exact non-whole quantities from a small set of transparent markers. Phẩy introduces decimal digits, phần trăm follows a percentage, and phần separates the numerator from the denominator of a fraction. The arithmetic is familiar to English speakers; the practical challenges are local punctuation, the order in which elements are spoken, and deciding whether a quantity is a measurement or a count of individual objects.
This page covers decimals, percentages, and fractions. It mentions prices only for contrast; currency expressions and shopping language are treated on Money and Prices.
Decimals with phẩy
In Vietnamese-formatted prose, a comma commonly marks the decimal boundary: 2,5. Read the comma as phẩy. In careful dictation, especially when every digit matters, read the digits after phẩy one by one.
Nhiệt độ cơ thể của bé là ba mươi bảy phẩy năm độ.
The baby's body temperature is 37.5 degrees.
Kết quả đo là không phẩy không năm milimét.
The measurement result is 0.05 millimeters.
Chiếc bàn dài một phẩy hai năm mét.
The table is 1.25 meters long.
Reading decimal digits separately preserves place value: 1,25 as một phẩy hai năm cannot be confused with 1,205. In less formal conversation, speakers may group a decimal tail that forms a familiar number, but digit-by-digit reading is the safest neutral strategy for measurements, calculations, and dictation.
Vietnamese typography often uses a period to group thousands and a comma for decimals: 1.234,5. English-language software often reverses those signs: 1,234.5. Always check the document’s locale before interpreting a bare written number.
Percentages with phần trăm
Place phần trăm directly after the number. It is the percentage unit, so no classifier such as cái is added.
Giá vé đã tăng mười lăm phần trăm so với năm ngoái.
Ticket prices have risen by fifteen percent compared with last year.
Khoảng hai mươi mốt phần trăm người tham gia chọn phương án này.
About twenty-one percent of participants chose this option.
Lãi suất là sáu phẩy năm phần trăm một năm.
The interest rate is 6.5 percent per year.
The positional forms remain normal: 21% is hai mươi mốt phần trăm, 34% is commonly ba mươi tư phần trăm, and 15% is mười lăm phần trăm. Ba mươi bốn phần trăm also occurs, because final tư varies more than mốt and lăm. The symbol does not license forms such as hai mươi một or mười năm in these neutral whole-number readings.
When a percentage modifies a population or amount, Vietnamese commonly adds the set after it: hai mươi phần trăm số người được hỏi “twenty percent of the people surveyed” or mười phần trăm doanh thu “ten percent of revenue.”
Fractions with phần
The productive pattern is:
numerator + phần + denominator
| Written | Read | Everyday alternative |
|---|---|---|
| 1/2 | một phần hai | một nửa — one half |
| 1/3 | một phần ba | — |
| 2/3 | hai phần ba | — |
| 3/4 | ba phần tư | — |
| 5/8 | năm phần tám | — |
Hai phần ba số sinh viên đã nộp bài đúng hạn.
Two thirds of the students submitted the assignment on time.
Cho ba phần tư cốc nước vào nồi rồi khuấy đều.
Add three quarters of a cup of water to the pot and stir well.
Tôi chỉ ăn một nửa chiếc bánh thôi.
I only ate half of the cake.
In hai phần ba, hai is the numerator and ba is the denominator. Một nửa is the natural everyday word for half, while một phần hai is especially at home in mathematical or precise explanatory language (academic).
Mixed quantities and rưỡi
For a mathematical mixed number, coordinate the whole and fractional parts with và: một và một phần hai “one and one half.” In everyday measurements and time expressions, rưỡi is much more natural for an additional half.
Tôi mua một ký rưỡi xoài.
I bought one and a half kilos of mangoes.
Chúng tôi đợi gần hai tiếng rưỡi.
We waited for nearly two and a half hours.
Phim bắt đầu lúc tám giờ rưỡi.
The film starts at 8:30.
With a measurement unit, rưỡi follows that unit: một ký rưỡi, hai tiếng rưỡi, tám giờ rưỡi. English places “and a half” after the number phrase, so learners often hesitate over the Vietnamese placement.
Counting objects versus measuring quantities
Decimals and fractions normally combine with a measurement unit or with a fraction of a whole, not directly with an ordinary object classifier. You can buy hai cái ghế “two chairs” or hai ký rưỡi gạo “two and a half kilos of rice.” Saying “2.5 chairs” requires a special context because individual chairs are counted as whole objects.
Kho cần ba triệu rưỡi lít nước mỗi ngày.
The facility needs three and a half million liters of water each day.
Dự án đã dùng một phần tư ngân sách, tức khoảng hai tỷ đồng.
The project has used one quarter of the budget, or about two billion đồng.
Here triệu and tỷ establish magnitude, while lít and đồng establish units. A classifier belongs before an ordinary count noun, as in hai mươi mốt cuốn sách, but not between a numerical quantity and its measurement unit.
A compact system map
| Form | Job | Signal |
|---|---|---|
| hai mươi mốt cái cốc | counting 21 cups | classifier phrase |
| ba mươi tư phần trăm | 34 percent | percentage unit |
| mười lăm phẩy năm | 15.5 | decimal boundary |
| thứ hai | second; Monday in calendar context | ordinal/calendar marker |
| ngày 7 tháng 10 | 7 October | day before month |
| tám giờ rưỡi | 8:30 | half after the time unit |
Cardinals, classifiers, ordinals, decimals, money, dates, clock time, duration, and calendar cycles all reuse the same number words. Their markers—cái, thứ, phẩy, phần trăm, đồng, ngày, tháng, and giờ—tell the listener how to interpret the number.
Precision in a natural exchange
An: Công thức ghi không phẩy năm ký bột, đúng không?
An: The recipe says 0.5 kilos of flour, right?
Bình: Đúng, nửa ký thôi. Năm ký thì nhiều gấp mười lần đấy!
Binh: Right, only half a kilo. Five kilos would be ten times as much!
An: Thế còn đường?
An: And the sugar?
Bình: Một phần tư ký, tức hai trăm năm mươi gam.
Binh: A quarter of a kilo, that is, 250 grams.
The word phẩy changes không phẩy năm “0.5” into a quantity ten times smaller than năm “5.” The follow-up nửa ký and một phần tư ký show how conversational fractions coexist with decimal notation.
Common Mistakes
1. Omitting phẩy at the decimal boundary
❌ Số 2,5 được đọc là hai năm.
Incorrect — omitting phẩy turns the decimal into an unclear digit sequence.
✅ Số 2,5 được đọc là hai phẩy năm.
The number 2.5 is read as two point five.
Phẩy must name the decimal boundary, regardless of whether software displays a comma or a period.
2. Reversing a fraction
❌ Tôi đã đọc ba phần hai cuốn sách.
Incorrect for “two thirds” — this says three halves.
✅ Tôi đã đọc hai phần ba cuốn sách.
I have read two thirds of the book.
Say the numerator first, then phần, then the denominator.
3. Adding a classifier before a unit
❌ Tôi cần hai cái ký gạo.
Incorrect — ký is already the measurement unit.
✅ Tôi cần hai ký gạo.
I need two kilos of rice.
Use classifiers for countable objects, not between a number and a conventional measurement unit.
4. Missing mốt, tư, or lăm before a percentage unit
❌ Thuế suất là hai mươi một phần trăm.
Incorrect in the neutral whole-number reading — final 1 after tens must be mốt.
✅ Thuế suất là hai mươi mốt phần trăm.
The tax rate is twenty-one percent.
The same positional system gives mười lăm phần trăm and commonly ba mươi tư phần trăm; ba mươi bốn phần trăm is also possible.
5. Carrying American date or time order into Vietnamese
❌ Báo cáo đề ngày tháng 10 ngày 7 và hẹn rưỡi tám giờ.
Incorrect — the date repeats ngày in English order, and rưỡi is misplaced.
✅ Báo cáo đề ngày 7 tháng 10 và hẹn lúc tám giờ rưỡi.
The report is dated 7 October and schedules the appointment for 8:30.
Vietnamese uses day–month order and places rưỡi after giờ. These unit words make the numerical relationships explicit.
Key Takeaways
- Read the decimal boundary as phẩy; digit-by-digit reading after it is safest for precision.
- Put phần trăm after a percentage and phần between a fraction’s numerator and denominator.
- Use rưỡi after the unit in everyday half quantities: một ký rưỡi, tám giờ rưỡi.
- Preserve mốt, tư, and lăm in whole-number parts, and distinguish measurements from classifier-based object counts.
