Negating a Vietnamese modal is fundamentally a question of scope: does the negative apply to the modal judgment or to the action inside it? Compare không thể đi “cannot go” with có thể không đi “may not go.” The same words for possibility and negation produce opposite commitments because their order tells the listener which operator has wider scope.
Vietnamese again divides English not according to aspect and speech act. Không denies possibility, necessity, permission, or advisability; chưa marks a modal situation as unresolved up to now; đừng issues a negative directive; and đâu có contradicts an assumption. This page concentrates on modal scope. The interaction of negation with đã, đang, sẽ, rồi, and other aspect-time markers belongs to Negation with Aspect Markers.
The scope principle
Read a sequence from the outside in. An element placed earlier normally has wider scope:
- không + MODAL + V: the modal relation is denied.
- MODAL + không + V: the modal remains true, while the embedded action is negative.
Tôi không thể tham dự cuộc họp ngày mai.
I cannot attend tomorrow's meeting.
Tôi có thể không tham dự cuộc họp ngày mai.
I may not attend tomorrow's meeting.
The first says attendance is impossible. The second says nonattendance is possible. English distinguishes cannot and may not, but English may not itself can mean either possibility or prohibition. Vietnamese normally makes the intended modal clearer through the selected expression and order.
A modal-negation decision table
| Form | Usual meaning | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| không thể V | cannot V; V is impossible | NEG > POSSIBILITY |
| có thể không V | may not V; perhaps no V | POSSIBILITY > NEG |
| không cần V | need not V | NEG > NEED |
| chưa cần V | do not need to V yet | NOT-YET > NEED |
| không nên V | should not V | NEG > ADVISABILITY |
| không được V | must not / may not V | NEGATED PERMISSION |
| không phải V | do not have to V, in the right context | NEGATED OBLIGATION |
| chưa thể V | cannot V yet | NOT-YET > POSSIBILITY |
These are constructional meanings, not conjugations. Vietnamese verbs do not change form for person or tense.
Possibility: không thể versus có thể không
Không thể expresses inability or impossibility. Có thể không leaves open the possibility that the event will not happen.
Vì đường bị ngập, xe buýt không thể đi qua.
Because the road is flooded, the bus cannot get through.
Nếu mưa lớn, xe buýt có thể không chạy.
If it rains heavily, the bus may not run.
For an inability that lasts only up to the reference time, use chưa thể:
Bác sĩ nói hiện giờ tôi chưa thể xuất viện.
The doctor says I can't leave the hospital yet.
The word chưa keeps a later positive outcome open. Tôi không thể xuất viện can sound like a more categorical impossibility; tôi chưa thể xuất viện implies that discharge may become possible later.
Necessity and obligation
Vietnamese separates positive obligation phải V from absence of necessity không cần V or, contextually, không phải V. A prohibition is different again.
Ngày mai anh phải nộp bản gốc.
You must submit the original tomorrow.
Anh không cần nộp bản sao.
You don't need to submit a copy.
Anh không được nộp tài liệu có thông tin cá nhân.
You must not submit documents containing personal information.
The last two cannot be interchanged. Không cần removes an obligation; the action remains permitted. Không được removes permission and functions as a prohibition.
Không phải + verb can also mean “not be required to,” especially when the context contrasts who is responsible or what is required:
Khách mời không phải trả phí; ban tổ chức sẽ chi trả.
Guests don't have to pay; the organizers will cover the cost.
Because không phải also performs corrective negation, context matters. Không phải tôi ký most readily means “It wasn't I who signed,” while Tôi không phải ký can mean “I don't have to sign.” For maximum clarity about lack of necessity, không cần phải ký is often the safest form.
Advice, desire, and willingness
With nên, negative-before-modal không nên V conventionally means “should not V.” It advises against the action, not merely denies that an obligation exists.
Bạn không nên tự ý ngừng thuốc.
You shouldn't stop taking the medicine on your own.
With volitional expressions, position distinguishes absence of desire from desire for a negative event:
Tôi không muốn làm phiền chị.
I don't want to bother you.
Tôi muốn anh không nhắc chuyện đó nữa.
I want you not to mention that again.
The second is grammatically possible, but Vietnamese often prefers the direct and more natural Tôi muốn anh đừng nhắc chuyện đó nữa “I want you not to mention that again.” Đừng packages the embedded negative as a directive.
Được: permission and achieved ability
Before a verb, không được V commonly denies permission: “must not / may not V.” After a verb, V không được often reports inability to carry the action through, especially in conversation.
Ở đây không được hút thuốc.
Smoking is not allowed here.
Tối qua tôi lo quá nên ngủ không được.
I was so worried last night that I couldn't sleep. (informal)
For planned or formal language, không thể ngủ được explicitly marks inability. The postverbal pattern ngủ không được is widespread in speech, with regional preferences in frequency rather than a strict regional boundary. Intonation and context distinguish it from a yes-no sequence such as ngủ được không? “Can [you/I] sleep?”
Negative polarity and emphatic modals
Negative-polarity items strengthen a modal denial. Hề appears inside a negative environment; chẳng/chả can replace neutral không with expressive force.
Tôi không hề muốn làm anh khó xử.
I had absolutely no intention of putting you in an awkward position.
Việc này chẳng thể giải quyết trong một ngày.
This simply cannot be resolved in one day.
The second is emphatic and somewhat elevated; chả thể is conversational (informal; especially Northern) and often sounds dismissive. In formal analysis, prefer không thể unless the rhetoric calls for chẳng thể.
The wider system in minimal contrasts
| Form | Interpretation | Why this negative |
|---|---|---|
| không biết | do not know | neutral state denial |
| chưa ăn | have not eaten yet | pending event |
| chẳng ai | nobody | negative quantification |
| đừng đi | do not go | negative directive |
| không phải là | is not / it is not that | rejected identity or account |
| đâu có quên | didn't forget! | defensive contradiction |
| không thể đi | cannot go | negated possibility |
The modal row does not replace the others. Đừng đi attempts to control the listener's action; không được đi says the action is not permitted; không thể đi says it is impossible; chưa thể đi says it is not possible yet.
A dialogue where scope changes the plan
— Chiều mai chị có thể dự buổi họp không? — Tôi có thể không đến kịp vì phải đưa mẹ đi khám.
— Can you attend the meeting tomorrow afternoon? — I may not arrive on time because I have to take my mother to an appointment.
— Nếu vậy chị có cần thuyết trình không? — Không cần; nhưng tôi không được vắng cả buổi.
— If so, do you need to give the presentation? — No; but I'm not allowed to miss the entire session.
— Chị tham gia trực tuyến được không? — Được, nhưng lúc đó tôi chưa thể bật máy quay.
— Can you join online? — Yes, but at that time I won't be able to turn on my camera yet.
Có thể không đến kịp marks possible nonarrival; it does not say arrival is categorically impossible. Không cần removes one duty, while không được preserves a prohibition. Chưa thể presents the camera limitation as temporary.
Common Mistakes
1. Reversing scope with có thể and không.
❌ Tôi có thể không mở tệp này.
Wrong for ‘I cannot open this file’; this means I may choose not to open it.
✅ Tôi không thể mở tệp này.
I cannot open this file.
2. Using a prohibition when there is merely no obligation.
❌ Ngày mai bạn không được đến sớm.
This means you are not allowed to arrive early.
✅ Ngày mai bạn không cần đến sớm.
You don't need to arrive early tomorrow.
3. Misordering chưa and thể in a temporary “not yet possible” meaning.
❌ Hiện giờ chúng tôi thể chưa công bố kết quả.
Incorrect — chưa must precede thể when ‘not yet’ has scope over present possibility.
✅ Hiện giờ chúng tôi chưa thể công bố kết quả; ba giờ mới công bố được.
We can't announce the results yet; we will only be able to at three.
4. Putting a Vietnamese negator after the modal phrase on an English model.
❌ Tôi cần nộp không bản sao.
Incorrect — không cannot be placed after nộp to create English ‘need not.’
✅ Tôi không cần nộp bản sao.
I don't need to submit a copy.
5. Confusing phải không with negative obligation.
❌ Anh phải không nộp đơn hôm nay.
Incorrect for ‘You don't have to submit the application today.’
✅ Anh không cần phải nộp đơn hôm nay, phải không?
You don't have to submit the application today, right?
Here final phải không? is a confirmation tag, while không cần phải inside the clause removes necessity.
Key Takeaways
- Word order encodes scope: không thể V and có thể không V do not mean the same thing.
- Không cần removes necessity; không được removes permission.
- Chưa thể/chưa cần make the modal restriction temporary or pending.
- Use không cần phải when “do not have to” must be unambiguous.
- Keep modal scope separate from aspect-marker placement, which the next page develops in detail.
