Constituent Negation and Contrast

Clausal negation rejects a whole predicate: Lan không gọi tôi “Lan didn't call me.” Constituent negation rejects one alternative inside a clause: Không phải Lan gọi tôi “It wasn't Lan who called me,” or Lan gọi tôi không phải hôm qua mà hôm kia “Lan called me not yesterday but the day before yesterday.” The facts under discussion may stay mostly intact; the speaker corrects only the responsible person, object, time, reason, label, or manner.

Vietnamese commonly signals this narrow focus with không phải (là), often followed by an explicit replacement introduced by mà. Prosody and context help identify the correction, but learners should not rely on stress alone. A clear frame prevents the listener from mistaking a local correction for denial of the entire event. Negative commands with đừng form a separate speech act and are developed on Đừng and Negative Commands.

Clause or constituent? Start with the target

What you rejectUseful frameExample meaning
the whole predicateSUBJECT + không + PREDICATELan did not call
the subjectkhông phải + SUBJECT + ...not Lan (someone else)
an object/choiceV + X, không phải Ytea, not coffee
one alternative replaced by anotherkhông phải X mà (là) Ynot X but Y
a reasonkhông phải vì X mà vì Ynot because X but because Y
a description inside a noun phraseN + không + ADJECTIVE/VPan unreasonable decision; a nonsmoker

The decisive question is not “Where can I put not?” but “Which proposition or alternative am I rejecting?” English often uses intonational stress—LAN didn't call versus Lan didn't CALL—where Vietnamese favors an overt corrective construction.

Clausal không versus corrective không phải

Neutral preverbal không has scope over the predicate that follows it.

Lan không gọi tôi tối qua.

Lan didn't call me last night.

Move to không phải Lan, and the call can remain true while the caller changes:

Không phải Lan gọi tôi tối qua; Mai mới là người gọi.

It wasn't Lan who called me last night; Mai was the one who called.

To correct the time, keep the event and reject the temporal constituent:

Lan gọi tôi không phải tối qua mà là sáng nay.

Lan called me not last night but this morning.

The particle mới in Mai mới là người gọi highlights the correct alternative. It is not required, but it makes the replacement especially explicit.

Không phải là can reject an entire proposed explanation:

Không phải là tôi không muốn giúp; tôi chưa nhận đủ thông tin.

It isn't that I don't want to help; I haven't received enough information yet.

Here the outer không phải là rejects the proposition “I don't want to help.” The inner không still negates wanting. This is also a double-negative frame, but its function on this page is corrective focus: it blocks the wrong explanation and supplies a better one.

Objects, labels, and alternatives

After a verb, an appended không phải + noun can correct an object or category already active in the conversation.

Tôi đặt trà nóng, không phải cà phê đá.

I ordered hot tea, not iced coffee.

Đây là lỗi nhập dữ liệu, không phải là lỗi hệ thống.

This is a data-entry error, not a system error.

With a balanced replacement, không phải X mà là Y is the clearest full frame. Là is natural before nominal labels; before verbal or adjectival phrases, it is often absent.

Mục tiêu không phải là cắt giảm nhân sự mà là phân bổ lại công việc.

The goal is not to reduce staff but to redistribute the work.

Anh ấy không phải lười mà chỉ đang kiệt sức.

He isn't lazy; he is just exhausted.

In careful writing, parallel constituents improve readability: noun against noun, reason against reason, action against action. Conversation tolerates looser pairings when context makes the correction obvious.

💡
Use là when the alternatives are identities, labels, or noun phrases. Do not insert it mechanically before every verb: không phải vì..., mà vì... and không phải muốn..., mà muốn... are normal without là before the verbal material.

Correcting reasons, purposes, and time

Reason corrections conventionally repeat vì on both sides. This repetition is not redundant; it makes the contrasted constituents parallel.

Tôi về sớm không phải vì chán mà vì con tôi bị sốt.

I left early not because I was bored but because my child had a fever.

Purpose can be contrasted with để, and time with matching temporal phrases:

Cô ấy đến không phải để phàn nàn mà để đề xuất một giải pháp.

She came not to complain but to propose a solution.

Hạn chót là thứ Sáu tuần sau, không phải thứ Sáu tuần này.

The deadline is next Friday, not this Friday.

English speakers often put not immediately before an infinitive and hope word order alone carries the intended focus. Vietnamese benefits from repeating để, vì, or another relation marker so the two alternatives have the same grammatical shape.

Negation inside a noun phrase

Không can occur inside a modifier, creating a negative property rather than negating the main clause. Compare quyết định không hợp lý “an unreasonable decision” and không quyết định “not decide.”

Chúng ta cần sửa những quy định không còn phù hợp.

We need to revise the regulations that are no longer appropriate.

Khu vực này có phòng riêng cho người không hút thuốc.

This area has a separate room for nonsmokers.

In the first sentence, không còn phù hợp modifies những quy định; it does not deny cần sửa. In the second, không hút thuốc identifies a class of people. Written context may use punctuation, noun repetition, or a fuller relative construction to prevent temporary ambiguity.

Contrast without an explicit replacement

A speaker can use không phải alone when the correct alternative is obvious, but the listener then relies heavily on context.

— Anh gọi món cay à? — Không phải; tôi gọi món không cay.

— Did you order the spicy dish? — No; I ordered the non-spicy dish.

The first không phải rejects the proposed choice. The second không cay is a modifier inside món không cay. The two negatives perform different jobs.

Corrective đâu có is more interactional and often defensive:

Tôi đâu có quên cuộc hẹn; tôi nhầm giờ thôi.

I didn't forget the appointment; I only got the time wrong.

This keeps the denial clausal but contradicts an accusation. For a calm contrast between alternatives, không phải X mà Y is more explicit.

The whole system in minimal contrasts

FormScope or speech act
không biếtneutral denial of knowing
chưa ăneating remains unrealized up to now
chẳng aino relevant person
đừng điprohibition; addressed to an agent
không phải làrejects an identity, label, or proposed account
đâu có quêndefensively contradicts “you forgot”
không phải Lan mà là Mairejects one focused subject and supplies another

The choice reveals whether the speaker denies, postpones, prohibits, or corrects. Chưa cannot replace không phải in a subject correction, and đừng cannot negate a past factual constituent: those forms encode different aspectual and speech-act structures.

A dialogue where focus repairs the wrong story

— Tôi nghe nói Lan hủy buổi gặp vì giận anh. — Không phải Lan hủy; chính tôi xin đổi lịch.

— I heard Lan canceled the meeting because she was angry with you. — It wasn't Lan who canceled; I was the one who asked to reschedule.

— Vậy anh không muốn gặp cô ấy à? — Không phải là tôi không muốn gặp; tôi chưa chuẩn bị xong tài liệu.

— So you don't want to meet her? — It isn't that I don't want to meet; I haven't finished preparing the documents.

— Thế buổi gặp chuyển sang tuần sau đúng không? — Không, chuyển sang chiều mai, không phải tuần sau.

— So the meeting was moved to next week, right? — No, it was moved to tomorrow afternoon, not next week.

Each reply preserves more of the event than a blanket không would. The first corrects the agent, the second corrects the motive while using chưa for unfinished preparation, and the third corrects the time.

Common Mistakes

1. Using clausal không when only the subject is wrong.

❌ Không Lan gọi tôi mà Mai.

Incorrect — bare không cannot directly frame the two contrasting subjects this way.

✅ Không phải Lan gọi tôi mà là Mai.

It wasn't Lan who called me; it was Mai.

The full frame identifies the rejected and replacement subjects in parallel.

2. Putting không after the lexical verb on an English model.

❌ Tôi mua không trà mà cà phê.

Incorrect — this placement does not build the intended ‘not tea but coffee’ contrast.

✅ Tôi mua cà phê, không phải trà.

I bought coffee, not tea.

Alternatively, say Tôi không mua trà mà mua cà phê when contrasting the two actions.

3. Failing to distinguish chưa from không.

❌ Tôi không chuẩn bị xong tài liệu.

Too categorical if the work is merely unfinished so far.

✅ Tôi chưa chuẩn bị xong tài liệu.

I haven't finished preparing the documents yet.

Chưa ... xong preserves the expected future completion.

4. Omitting the parallel relation marker in a complex correction.

❌ Anh ấy vắng mặt không phải vì bận mà bị sốt.

Awkward — the second alternative lacks the matching reason marker.

✅ Anh ấy vắng mặt không phải vì bận mà vì bị sốt.

He was absent not because he was busy but because he had a fever.

Repeating vì makes both alternatives reasons and removes a processing stumble.

5. Mixing là into a verbal contrast and losing parallel structure.

❌ Cô ấy đến không phải để phàn nàn mà là đề xuất giải pháp.

Incorrect for the intended contrast: mà là đề xuất can be misread as a nominal identification and does not match the first purpose phrase.

✅ Cô ấy đến không phải để phàn nàn mà để đề xuất giải pháp.

She came not to complain but to propose a solution.

💡
Make the correction symmetrical: không phải [X] mà [Y], with the same preposition or relation marker on both sides whenever possible. Symmetry makes scope visible.

Key Takeaways

  • Subject + không + predicate negates the predicate; không phải + focused constituent corrects a specific alternative.
  • Không phải X mà (là) Y is the clearest replacement frame.
  • Repeat vì, để, or another relation marker when contrasting reasons or purposes.
  • Negative modifiers such as người không hút thuốc stay inside a noun phrase and do not negate the main clause.
  • Vietnamese selects different negative forms for denial, not-yet aspect, prohibition, and contradiction; English not does not map to one universal form.
