Không Thể versus Không Được

Vietnamese draws a crucial line between không thể + verb “cannot because it is impossible or beyond one's capacity” and preverbal không được + verb “must not / is not allowed to / does not get to.” English cannot can express either meaning, so translating it without identifying the source of the barrier produces serious errors.

Compare Tôi không thể vào “I cannot enter; entry is impossible for me” with Tôi không được vào “I am not allowed to enter.” A locked door, an injury, or incompatible timing favors không thể. A rule, refusal, or lack of granted access favors không được. Context can enrich each form, but it does not erase this basic distinction.

The core contrast: obstacle versus authority

FormSource of the negativeNatural question behind it
không thể + verbphysical, practical, logical, or circumstantial impossibilityIs the action possible?
không được + verbprohibition, denied permission, or absent opportunityIs the action allowed or available?
không + verb + được / verb + không đượcfailure to achieve the action despite trying or needing toCan the subject manage it?

Tôi không thể họp lúc hai giờ vì đang ở trên máy bay.

I cannot meet at two because I will be on a plane.

Tôi không được họp với khách hàng này nếu chưa có quản lý tham dự.

I am not allowed to meet this client unless a manager is present.

The first barrier is scheduling and circumstance. The second comes from a workplace rule.

Tôi cố đăng nhập mấy lần mà vẫn không đăng nhập được.

I tried to log in several times but still could not manage to log in.

Postverbal được in không đăng nhập được marks successful ability or attainment; negating the whole predicate describes failure. The colloquial order đăng nhập không được has the same failure reading. Both are distinct from không được đăng nhập, which normally prohibits logging in.

💡
Locate được relative to the action. Không được mở usually says “must not open”; neutral không mở được says “cannot get it open,” and colloquial or emphatic mở không được has the same failure reading. Word order is part of the grammar, not a stylistic choice.

Không thể: impossibility and incapacity

Không thể denies a possibility. The obstacle may be temporary, permanent, circumstantial, physical, or logical.

Vết thương còn đau nên chị ấy chưa thể chạy được.

The injury still hurts, so she cannot run yet.

Hai cuộc họp diễn ra cùng lúc, vì vậy tôi không thể tham dự cả hai.

The two meetings take place at the same time, so I cannot attend both.

Không thể có ba đáp án đúng nếu đề chỉ yêu cầu chọn một.

There cannot be three correct answers if the question asks for only one.

The third example has no human subject and no question of permission. It rejects a logical possibility.

Không thể can also express strong disbelief or rejection: Không thể nào! “No way!” and Anh ấy không thể nói như vậy được “He couldn't possibly say that.” This use assesses plausibility, not authorization.

Cô ấy không thể nào quên cuộc hẹn quan trọng như thế.

She cannot possibly have forgotten such an important appointment.

The surrounding evidence may still make the claim wrong, but the grammar presents forgetting as incompatible with the speaker's expectations.

Không được: prohibition, denied access, and missed opportunity

Preverbal không được + action most readily expresses a prohibition.

Không được chạm vào thiết bị khi đèn đỏ đang sáng.

Do not touch the equipment while the red light is on.

Ứng viên không được sử dụng điện thoại trong phòng thi.

Candidates may not use phones in the examination room.

This form can sound like a rule or directive. In conversation, the authority relationship matters: a parent saying Con không được thức khuya sets a rule; a junior employee saying Anh không được làm thế to a senior may sound confrontational unless the speaker is quoting policy or warning of consequences.

Không được can also report that an expected or desired opportunity did not arise:

Tuần trước tôi bị ốm nên không được gặp cháu mới sinh.

I was ill last week, so I did not get to meet the newborn baby.

No one necessarily forbade the meeting. The illness prevented access to a valued experience. A reason such as bị ốm, bận, or chuyến bay bị hủy usually guides the interpretation.

Explicit prohibition and careful policy language

Không được phép + action makes denied authorization explicit and is especially useful in formal explanations.

Nhà thầu không được phép thay đổi thiết kế nếu chưa có văn bản chấp thuận.

The contractor is not permitted to change the design without written approval.

This is stronger and more institutionally explicit than ordinary không được thay đổi. A short sign may still prefer Cấm vào “No entry” or Không được vào “Entry is not allowed.” See Được Phép in Explicit Rules for the full register contrast.

Politeness can recast a prohibition as a request or explanation:

Anh vui lòng không chụp ảnh trong khu vực này ạ.

Please do not take photographs in this area, sir.

The rule remains negative, but vui lòng, the address term, and ạ avoid an unnecessarily abrupt command in a service encounter.

How the contrast fits the modal system

Vietnamese distributes modality across predicates, stance adverbs, and clause frames. The following compact map prevents one-to-one translation of English modal verbs:

Minimal contrastModal force
phải đigoing is obligatory
cần làmdoing it is needed
có thể đếncoming is possible
được phép vàoentry is authorized
nên nghỉresting is advisable
chắc là đúngthe proposition is probably right

Anh không được vào khu này, nhưng anh có thể đợi ở sảnh và nên gọi cho người phụ trách.

You are not allowed into this area, but you can wait in the lobby and should call the person in charge.

The sentence separately encodes a prohibition, an available option, and advice. Replacing all three with an English-like all-purpose can would lose the distinctions.

Evidential stance is separate again. Chắc, hẳn, dường như, and có lẽ evaluate how likely the speaker thinks a claim is.

Dường như anh ấy không được vào; có lẽ thẻ của anh ấy đã hết hạn.

It seems he is not allowed in; perhaps his card has expired.

Cửa vẫn khóa, nên họ chắc là chưa thể vào; bảo vệ hẳn đang trên đường đến.

The door is still locked, so they probably cannot enter yet; the security guard must surely be on the way.

Evidence supports the claims, but không được vào remains about access and chưa thể vào about current feasibility.

Negation scope and aspect

Không thể + verb negates possibility. Có thể không + verb leaves a negative outcome possible. These are not synonyms.

Tôi không thể tham dự ngày mai.

I cannot attend tomorrow.

Tôi có thể không tham dự ngày mai.

I may not attend tomorrow.

With được, aspect and time markers locate the permission or opportunity. Đã không được vào says access was denied or absent at a prior time; chưa được vào says access has not yet been granted or realized.

Sáng nay chúng tôi đã không được vào tòa nhà vì hệ thống báo cháy.

This morning we were not allowed to enter the building because of the fire alarm.

Chúng tôi chưa được vào; bảo vệ vẫn đang kiểm tra danh sách.

We have not been allowed in yet; security is still checking the list.

By contrast, chưa thể vào says entry is not yet possible, perhaps because the door is locked or construction continues. In real situations, both may be true, but the speaker chooses which barrier to foreground.

A dialogue: the reason for “can't”

Vy: Sao anh chưa vào phòng họp? Anh không thể vào à?
Sơn: Không phải. Tôi vào được, nhưng tôi không được vào trước khi khách đến. Đó là quy định.
Vy: Khách báo sẽ muộn mười phút. Vậy anh phải đợi ở đây à?
Sơn: Ừ. Có lẽ tôi nên gọi cho trưởng phòng xin phép.

Vy first asks about practical inability. Sơn replies with postverbal vào được, confirming that entry is physically possible, then preverbal không được vào, identifying prohibition. Phải introduces the consequence as an obligation; nên evaluates calling as a sensible response.

Common Mistakes

1. Using không thể for a rule.

❌ Hành khách không thể mở cửa khi tàu đang chạy.

Misleading for a prohibition: this can imply that opening the door is physically impossible.

✅ Hành khách không được mở cửa khi tàu đang chạy.

Passengers must not open the door while the train is moving.

The correction locates the barrier in rules, not mechanics.

2. Using không được for temporary incapacity without context.

❌ Hôm nay tôi không được lái xe vì mắt bị đau.

Ambiguous: it may sound as though someone prohibited driving.

✅ Hôm nay tôi không thể lái xe vì mắt bị đau.

I cannot drive today because my eye hurts.

Pain removes practical capacity, so không thể is clearer.

3. Ignoring the position of được.

❌ Cửa này tôi không được mở.

Wrong for ‘I cannot get this door open’: this says I am not allowed to open it.

✅ Cửa này tôi không mở được.

I cannot get this door open.

Postverbal không được reports unsuccessful attainment.

4. Reversing possibility scope.

❌ Anh ấy không thể đến.

Wrong if the intended meaning is only ‘He may not come’; this states that coming is impossible.

✅ Anh ấy có thể không đến.

He may not come.

5. Making a customer-facing prohibition unnecessarily abrupt.

❌ Bà không được đứng đây!

Potentially harsh in an ordinary service situation: ‘You must not stand here!’

✅ Bà vui lòng đứng sau vạch này giúp cháu ạ.

Please stand behind this line, ma’am.

The repair preserves the boundary while using a positive instruction, relational address, giúp, and deferential ạ.

Key Takeaways

  • Không thể + verb denies possibility or capacity; không được + verb normally denies permission or opportunity.
  • Verb + không được describes failure to manage or achieve the action.
  • Không được phép is explicit policy language; everyday rules often use concise không được.
  • Có thể không làm means “may not do,” not “cannot do.”
  • Choose the negative modal from the source of the barrier, then adjust address and politeness to the relationship.
