Buộc Phải and External Compulsion

Vietnamese buộc phải + predicate presents an action as compelled by external circumstances, rules, or another actor: there is effectively no acceptable alternative. It is stronger and more explicit than ordinary phải “must/have to.” In its full verbal pattern, buộc means “force/compel”: X buộc Y phải làm Z “X forces Y to do Z.”

Because buộc phải highlights pressure and lack of choice, it is common in news reports, administrative language, formal explanations, and serious personal accounts. It is possible in everyday speech, but using it for a routine task can sound dramatic. A parent saying Con phải dọn phòng gives an obligation; Con bị buộc phải dọn phòng frames the child as having been forced. See Phải for Necessity and Obligation for the unmarked obligation pattern.

StructurePerspectiveTypical meaning
X buộc Y phải Vthe compelling actorX forces Y to V
Y bị buộc phải Vthe affected personY is forced to V
Y buộc phải Vthe compelled choiceY is compelled / has no choice but to V

Tòa án buộc công ty phải bồi thường cho khách hàng.

The court ordered the company to compensate the customers.

Công ty bị buộc phải thu hồi toàn bộ lô hàng.

The company was forced to recall the entire batch.

Vì nước dâng quá nhanh, nhiều gia đình buộc phải sơ tán trong đêm.

Because the water rose so quickly, many families were forced to evacuate during the night.

In the last example, no human causer occupies the subject position. The flood creates the compulsion, so bare buộc phải efficiently foregrounds the families’ constrained decision.

💡
Use buộc phải when “no real alternative remained” is part of your message. If you only mean that an action is required, plain phải is usually enough.

What counts as external compulsion?

The pressure may come from an institution, a person, physical circumstances, or the logic of a situation.

Theo hợp đồng, bên thuê buộc phải thanh toán trước ngày mười lăm.

Under the contract, the tenant is obliged to pay before the fifteenth.

Bác sĩ buộc anh ấy phải ngừng tập luyện trong sáu tuần.

The doctor required him to stop training for six weeks.

Máy chủ hỏng khiến nhóm kỹ thuật buộc phải chuyển sang hệ thống dự phòng.

The server failure forced the technical team to switch to the backup system.

The first is legal or contractual, the second comes from professional authority, and the third arises from events. In formal reporting, writers often name the cause with do, vì, theo, or khiến. This helps justify the strong wording.

Do not confuse compulsion with unwillingness alone. Tôi không muốn đi nhưng vẫn phải đi says “I do not want to go, but I still have to.” Tôi buộc phải đi additionally presents the circumstances as closing off alternatives. Đành phải often highlights reluctant acceptance—“have no choice but to”—and can sound more personal and conversational.

Nobody could cover the shift, so I had no choice but to stay.

ExpressionQuestion it answersForce
phải điIs going required?ordinary obligation or necessity
cần làmIs doing this needed for a goal?practical requirement
buộc phải làmWas doing this forced by an outside constraint?strong compulsion; no viable alternative
có thể đếnIs coming possible?ability or possibility
được phép vàoDo the rules permit entry?permission
nên nghỉWould resting be the wise choice?advice
chắc là đúngIs it probably true?epistemic confidence

Employees may arrive late if they give notice, but they are not permitted to enter the machinery area without a badge.

This warning is probably correct, so we need to investigate immediately; if the risk is confirmed, the factory may be forced to close.

The second example combines epistemic and practical modality. Chắc là assesses truth, cần states a need, có thể marks possibility, and buộc phải describes possible compulsion. Vietnamese does not compress all four into one English-like auxiliary system.

Other evidential stances remain distinct: hẳn marks strong inference, dường như an appearance, and có lẽ a possibility.

It seems the partner will withdraw; perhaps we will be forced to find another source of funding.

They must surely have considered it carefully before being compelled to cancel the project.

Intention uses định/dự định and does not itself imply compulsion. A plan may be abandoned when external pressure intervenes:

Chúng tôi dự định ở lại đến cuối năm, nhưng việc cắt giảm nhân sự khiến cả nhóm buộc phải chuyển đi sớm.

We intended to stay until the end of the year, but the staff cuts forced the whole team to move earlier.

Negation: removing compulsion is not prohibition

Không buộc phải + V means “not compelled/required to V.” It removes the requirement and leaves the action optional.

Participants are not required to answer every question.

This is not “Participants must not answer.” A prohibition would use không được trả lời or another negative-command construction. The position of không determines scope.

In the full transitive construction, negating buộc denies that one party is forcing another:

Công ty không buộc nhân viên phải làm thêm vào cuối tuần.

The company does not require employees to work overtime on weekends.

To require non-action, Vietnamese often chooses a clearer lexical predicate such as ngừng, tránh, or giữ kín rather than stacking buộc phải không:

Sau vụ rò rỉ, nhà cung cấp bị buộc phải ngừng thu thập dữ liệu.

After the leak, the provider was forced to stop collecting data.

Time and aspect

Modal expressions do not conjugate. Đã, sẽ, temporal phrases, and the surrounding discourse locate the compulsion in time.

Năm ngoái, cửa hàng đã buộc phải chuyển địa điểm vì chủ nhà tăng giá thuê.

Last year, the shop was forced to relocate because the landlord raised the rent.

Nếu chi phí tiếp tục tăng, chúng tôi sẽ buộc phải điều chỉnh giá.

If costs continue to rise, we will be forced to adjust prices.

In very natural accounts of a completed past necessity, plain đã phải may be lighter than đã buộc phải. Choose the reinforced form only when external pressure or lack of choice deserves emphasis. Aspect within the following event remains separate: buộc phải làm xong trước thứ Hai requires completion by Monday; xong belongs to làm, not to buộc.

A natural exchange

An: Sao cửa hàng đóng sớm vậy chị?

Hạnh’s buộc phải attributes the closure to a safety constraint, not her preference. Có thể asks about possibility, được phép answers in terms of permission, phải imposes an access condition, and nên offers advice. The address pairing chị–em and ạ maintains politeness even while discussing rules.

Common Mistakes

1. Using buộc phải for a mild recommendation.

❌ Trời hơi lạnh, anh buộc phải mang áo khoác.

Too strong: mild weather does not normally remove all choice.

It is a little cold; you should bring a jacket.

The correction uses advice rather than external compulsion.

2. Putting passive bị on the compelling cause.

❌ Quy định bị buộc nhân viên phải đeo thẻ.

Incorrect: the regulation is the compelling cause, not the affected recipient of force.

✅ Quy định buộc nhân viên phải đeo thẻ.

The regulation requires employees to wear badges.

In the causative frame X buộc Y phải V, the cause occupies X. Use Y bị buộc phải V only when Y is the affected party.

3. Confusing “not required” with “must not.”

Wrong for ‘Guests must not take photos’: this says photography is optional.

Guests are not allowed to take photos in this room.

4. Translating inferential English “must” as compulsion.

❌ Xe không còn ở đây; anh ấy buộc phải đã về rồi.

Incorrect: the evidence supports an inference, not external force.

✅ Xe không còn ở đây; anh ấy hẳn đã về rồi.

The car is no longer here; he must have gone home already.

Hẳn marks the strong conclusion drawn from the absent car.

Key Takeaways

  • X buộc Y phải V names a causer; Y bị buộc phải V highlights the affected party; Y buộc phải V highlights the constrained choice.
  • Buộc phải is stronger and often more formal than ordinary phải.
  • Không buộc phải means “not required,” not “forbidden.”
  • Name the rule, person, or circumstance causing the pressure when it helps justify the strong modal.
  • Keep compulsion distinct from advice, permission, possibility, and evidence-based probability.
