Vietnamese chắc and chắc là often mark a speaker’s fairly confident assessment that a proposition is true: “probably,” “I expect,” or, in some contexts, “must.” They are epistemic expressions because they qualify the speaker’s commitment to information, not a participant’s duty or ability.
Trời tối thế này, chắc sắp mưa rồi.
With the sky this dark, it’s probably about to rain.
Anh ấy chưa trả lời; chắc là đang họp.
He hasn’t replied; he is probably in a meeting.
The evidence may be visible, inferred from circumstances, or simply based on experience. Chắc does not encode a fixed mathematical probability. It normally conveys more confidence than cautious có lẽ, but intonation, particles, and context can strengthen or weaken the judgment.
Clause position and the role of là
Both chắc P and chắc là P are common. At the beginning of a clause, they frame the whole proposition as probable:
Chắc mai chị Lan mới về.
Ms. Lan probably won’t be back until tomorrow.
Chắc là họ nhầm địa chỉ rồi.
They have probably got the address wrong.
Là helps mark the following material as the content of the judgment. It is particularly natural when the proposition is long, when the speaker is drawing a conclusion, or when chắc might otherwise be read as the adjective “certain/firm.” In quick (informal) speech, bare chắc is extremely common.
The marker may also follow the subject:
Chị Lan chắc là chưa đọc tin nhắn.
Ms. Lan probably hasn’t read the message.
This placement keeps chị Lan as the established topic and comments on what is probably true of her. Initial Chắc là chị Lan chưa đọc tin nhắn places the speaker’s assessment in the foreground. The truth conditions are similar, but the information structure differs.
Do not confuse epistemic chắc with predicative chắc “certain/sure” or adjectival chắc “solid/firm”:
Tôi không chắc là cửa đã khóa.
I’m not sure that the door has been locked.
Cái bàn này rất chắc.
This table is very sturdy.
In tôi không chắc, tôi is the experiencer of certainty. In chắc là cửa đã khóa, chắc là scopes over the proposition.
Evidence, confidence, and neighboring markers
Vietnamese offers several ways to locate a proposition between fact and possibility. They are not a rigid percentage scale, because each profiles a different relation to evidence.
| Expression | Typical stance | Natural use |
|---|---|---|
| có lẽ P | cautious possibility or tentative probability | the speaker leaves alternatives visibly open |
| chắc (là) P | fairly confident expectation | broad everyday inference or prediction |
| hẳn (là) P / chắc hẳn P | strong inference | the conclusion follows persuasively from circumstances |
| dường như P | appearance-based assessment | the available signs make P seem true |
| chắc chắn P | explicit certainty | the speaker commits much more strongly to P |
Có lẽ xe buýt đến muộn, nhưng tôi không chắc.
Perhaps the bus is late, but I’m not sure.
Chắc là xe buýt sẽ đến muộn vì đường đang tắc.
The bus will probably be late because traffic is congested.
Đường ngập hết rồi; xe buýt hẳn sẽ đến muộn.
The roads are completely flooded; the bus is bound to be late.
Dường như xe buýt sẽ đến muộn would foreground the appearance—perhaps the tracking display or the empty stop suggests delay. The choice is about both confidence and evidential basis.
This page focuses on ordinary chắc (là). The more cautious stance of có lẽ is treated on Có Lẽ and Epistemic Possibility.
Time and aspect inside the assessed proposition
Chắc does not conjugate. Markers after it locate the event or state that the speaker assesses.
| Pattern | Reading | Example meaning |
|---|---|---|
| chắc (là) đã + V | probable completed/past event | has probably V-ed |
| chắc (là) đang + V | probable ongoing event | is probably V-ing |
| chắc (là) sẽ + V | probable future event | will probably V |
| chắc (là) chưa + V | probable not-yet state | probably has not V-ed yet |
Giờ này họ chắc là đã đến Huế rồi.
By now they have probably arrived in Hue.
Đừng gọi lúc này; bé chắc đang ngủ.
Don’t call right now; the baby is probably sleeping.
Với tiến độ này, dự án chắc sẽ hoàn thành sớm.
At this rate, the project will probably be completed early.
The scope is chắc [đã/đang/sẽ P]. Putting an aspect marker before epistemic chắc normally changes the construction: đã chắc can mean “has become/is now certain,” as in Kết quả vẫn chưa chắc “The result is still not certain.” It is not simply a past tense of modal chắc.
Negation: two scopes, two meanings
The contrast between không chắc là P and chắc là không P is fundamental.
- không chắc là P = the speaker is not certain that P
- chắc là không P = the speaker thinks it is probable that not-P
Tôi không chắc là Nam có đến không.
I’m not sure whether Nam is coming.
Nam chắc là không đến đâu.
Nam probably isn’t coming.
The first leaves both possibilities open. The second favors non-arrival. Final đâu (informal) reinforces the negative conclusion; it is not required.
In a short question, chắc không? can mean “Are you sure?”:
Mai nộp cũng được. Anh chắc không?
It’s okay to submit it tomorrow. Are you sure?
Here chắc is a predicate addressed to anh, and final không closes a yes–no question. It is not the epistemic sequence “probably not.”
Modality is more than one family of English auxiliaries
English modal verbs combine meanings that Vietnamese usually keeps distinct:
| Vietnamese | Modal domain | Core meaning |
|---|---|---|
| phải đi | necessity | must go |
| cần làm | need | need to do |
| có thể đến | ability/possibility | can or may come |
| được phép vào | permission | be permitted to enter |
| nên nghỉ | advice | should rest |
| chắc là đúng | probability | is probably right |
English must be right is a strong inference, not an obligation. Depending on evidence and register, Vietnamese may use chắc là đúng, hẳn là đúng, or chắc hẳn là đúng. Conversely, phải đúng can mean “must be correct” when a rule or required condition is at issue, and context must distinguish that necessity from an inference.
Mật khẩu phải đúng thì hệ thống mới cho đăng nhập.
The password has to be correct before the system will allow access.
This is a condition, not the speaker’s probability judgment.
Confidence can also manage politeness
Speakers use chắc not only to report probability but also to avoid sounding categorical. Chắc mình nên về thôi can present leaving as an expected conclusion rather than a blunt announcement. That softening is pragmatic; chắc still marks an assessment.
Phương: Gần mười giờ rồi, cậu còn ở lại không?
Dũng: Chắc tớ về thôi. Mai tớ phải dậy sớm.
Phương: Ừ, đường giờ này chắc là vắng rồi.
Dũng: Có lẽ thế, nhưng tớ vẫn gọi xe cho an toàn.
Dũng’s chắc tớ về thôi is a mildly softened decision in context. Phương’s chắc là vắng is a confident prediction. Dũng replies with weaker có lẽ, signaling that he accepts the possibility without relying on it. Phải dậy expresses necessity and belongs to another modal domain.
Common Mistakes
1. Translating epistemic English “must” with obligation phải
❌ Đèn còn sáng; họ phải đang ở nhà.
Misleading for the inference ‘They must be home’; phải readily suggests necessity.
✅ Đèn còn sáng; chắc là họ đang ở nhà.
The light is still on; they are probably at home.
The repair marks a probability judgment, not an obligation.
2. Reversing the scope of negation
❌ Tôi không chắc là anh ấy đến.
Wrong if the intended claim is ‘He probably isn’t coming’; this only says the speaker is uncertain that he is coming.
✅ Chắc là anh ấy không đến đâu.
He probably isn’t coming.
Put không inside the assessed proposition to favor the negative conclusion.
3. Treating chắc and chắc chắn as identical in force
❌ Có thể lịch còn đổi, nhưng cuộc họp chắc chắn diễn ra lúc ba giờ.
Overconfident and internally inconsistent if the schedule may change.
✅ Có thể lịch còn đổi, nhưng cuộc họp chắc sẽ diễn ra vào khoảng ba giờ.
The schedule may still change, but the meeting will probably take place around three.
Chắc chắn asserts explicit certainty; chắc là leaves more room for revision.
4. Using chắc for permission
❌ Khách chắc vào phòng này sau sáu giờ.
Incorrect for ‘Guests may enter this room after six’; chắc expresses probability, not authorization.
✅ Khách được phép vào phòng này sau sáu giờ.
Guests are permitted to enter this room after six.
The repair uses an explicit permission frame.
Key Takeaways
- Chắc (là) P presents P as a fairly confident expectation or inference.
- Initial placement frames the whole proposition; subject-medial placement keeps the subject as topic.
- Không chắc là P expresses uncertainty, while chắc là không P favors a negative conclusion.
- Đã, đang, sẽ, chưa normally occur inside the proposition assessed by chắc.
- Confidence, obligation, ability, advice, permission, and resolve require different Vietnamese expressions; English modal vocabulary does not map one-to-one.
