Both không nên + predicate and đừng + predicate can correspond to English shouldn’t or don’t, but they perform different social actions. Không nên evaluates an action as unwise, improper, or undesirable. Đừng directly asks or tells an addressee not to do it. The first is negative advice or a normative judgment; the second is a prohibitive directive.
This difference matters because Vietnamese modal force is spread across the marker, address terms, final particles, intonation, and the speakers’ relationship. Anh không nên lái xe lúc này gives a reasoned judgment; Anh đừng lái xe lúc này intervenes in the listener’s immediate plan. They can describe the same real-world danger while positioning the speaker differently.
The core contrast
| Form | Core action | Typical time | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| không nên + predicate | judge the action inadvisable | general, future, or retrospective | advice, norms, criticism |
| đừng + predicate | try to prevent the addressee from acting | now or future | warning, request, prohibition |
You should not stay up too late before the exam.
Đừng thức khuya nữa, mai cậu còn phải thi đấy.
Don’t stay up late anymore; you still have an exam tomorrow.
The first sentence can be general advice. The second is addressed to someone who is still awake and seeks to stop the behavior. Nữa “anymore” and đấy add context and interpersonal force.
Users should not share the verification code with anyone.
Please don’t read the verification code out to a stranger.
The generic subject người dùng favors a norm. Direct address cô plus final nhé creates a respectful, listener-specific warning.
Subjects, addressees, and politeness
English imperatives usually omit you. Vietnamese can omit the addressee when the relationship is already clear, but an overt term such as anh, chị, em, cô, chú, bác, con, cháu, or a name locates the directive socially.
Bác đừng đứng dậy vội ạ, để cháu lấy ghế.
Please don’t stand up yet; let me get a chair for you.
Here bác–cháu and deferential ạ make a direct preventive act caring rather than brusque. Final nhé/nha may invite cooperation; a sharp bare Đừng làm thế! is urgent and forceful.
Don’t worry; I’ve already called someone to help.
Đừng is not always harsh: with a state such as lo “worry” and warm prosody, it reassures. Conversely, Anh không nên nói như vậy may be a severe rebuke because the speaker condemns the listener’s conduct.
You shouldn’t speak to Mom in that tone.
Politeness therefore cannot be read from the modal alone.
General norms, past criticism, and immediate prevention
Medicine should not be left within children’s reach.
It can also evaluate a past action with lẽ ra/đáng lẽ:
Lẽ ra tôi không nên gửi email khi đang tức giận.
I should not have sent the email while I was angry.
The action happened, and the speaker now judges it negatively. Đừng cannot normally prohibit an already completed event. It may occur when retelling words spoken earlier—Tôi đã bảo anh ấy: “Đừng gửi.”—but the quoted directive still points forward from that earlier moment.
Đừng bấm nút đó—máy đang cập nhật.
Don’t press that button—the machine is updating.
This is immediate prevention, the natural home of đừng.
Scope and combinations with other modals
In không nên V, không negates the recommendation: doing V is not advisable. In a clear yes–no question, final không has a different function:
Mình có nên hủy cuộc hẹn không?
Should we cancel the appointment?
Do not move words mechanically from English. Nên không đi is possible only in carefully constructed contrast, and often sounds awkward for ordinary “shouldn’t go.” Không nên đi is the unmarked expression.
Other modal forms answer other questions:
| Expression | Meaning | Contrast with the target forms |
|---|---|---|
| phải đi | must go | obligation, not advice or prohibition |
| cần làm | need to do | requirement for a goal |
| có thể đến | can / may be able to come | ability or possibility |
| được phép vào | be permitted to enter | rule-based permission |
| nên nghỉ | should rest | positive recommendation |
| chắc là đúng | probably right | probability, not control of an action |
Không được + predicate is another prohibitive pattern, often stronger or rule-based: “must not / not allowed to.” Its full contrast with đừng belongs on the negative commands page.
Evidence is not advice
English modal vocabulary can blur recommendation and probability. Vietnamese normally keeps them apart. Chắc and hẳn indicate confidence or inference; dường như signals an appearance; có lẽ marks possibility.
It seems it is about to rain; perhaps we should not take the mountain road.
The light is still on, so they probably haven’t gone to sleep; but let’s not call this late.
The first clauses assess evidence. Không nên then evaluates a plan, while đừng is a speaker-inclusive preventive proposal because mình is understood from context. Chắc là đúng would mean “probably correct,” not “should be morally correct.”
Plans use định/dự định, which can then become the target of advice or prevention:
Tôi định đăng ảnh này, nhưng Lan bảo tôi không nên đăng và dặn tôi đừng vội.
I intended to post this photo, but Lan said I should not post it and told me not to rush.
One situation, two interpretations
Linh first offers a general security judgment: showing the booking code is inadvisable. When Mai is about to act, Linh switches to đừng đăng, directly preventing the upload. Final vội “yet/hastily” and nhé soften the intervention while preserving its urgency.
Common Mistakes
1. Using advice when an urgent intervention is intended.
Too evaluative if the listener is reaching toward a live wire.
✅ Anh đừng chạm vào dây điện đó!
Don’t touch that electrical wire!
The correction performs an immediate prohibition rather than merely judging the action.
2. Using đừng for retrospective regret.
❌ Hôm qua tôi đừng nói câu đó.
Incorrect: yesterday’s speech can no longer be prevented.
✅ Lẽ ra hôm qua tôi không nên nói câu đó.
I should not have said that yesterday.
Lẽ ra... không nên... evaluates a course that was taken but ought not to have been.
3. Copying English negative placement.
Unnatural as an ordinary negative recommendation.
You should not drink coffee in the evening.
Preverbal không nên conventionally scopes as “it is not advisable to.”
4. Assuming a final particle makes every order polite.
❌ Cô đừng làm phiền tôi nhé.
Grammatically formed but still potentially rude to an older stranger; nhé does not erase the rebuke.
Could you please speak a little more quietly?
The repair changes the social action into a respectful positive request and uses appropriate address terms.
Key Takeaways
- Không nên gives negative advice or states that conduct is improper.
- Đừng seeks to prevent an addressee from acting now or later.
- Lẽ ra/đáng lẽ... không nên... can criticize a completed past action; đừng cannot undo one.
- Address terms, reasons, particles, and intonation may soften or strengthen either construction.
- Permission, obligation, ability, and probability use other modal resources; English shouldn’t and don’t are not reliable one-to-one guides.
