English uses be in both “There is a pharmacy nearby” and “The pharmacy is nearby.” Vietnamese normally makes a sharper choice. Use có to present a person, thing, service, or event as present or available; use ở to say where an already identifiable person or thing is, stays, or lives. The physical scene can be identical, but the listener is guided into that scene from a different starting point.
This is therefore not a choice between two translations of English is. It is a choice between two clause patterns. Ở đây có máy ATM opens with a location and introduces an ATM. Máy ATM ở đây opens with an identifiable ATM and locates it here. Questions about không and chưa belong on their dedicated decision page.
The decision in one table
| Your communicative task | Pattern | Natural example |
|---|---|---|
| Present what exists or is available | (place/time) + có + new entity | Gần đây có hiệu thuốc. |
| Locate a known person or thing | known entity + ở + place | Hiệu thuốc ở gần đây. |
| Ask whether something is available | place + có + entity + không? | Ở đây có nhà vệ sinh không? |
| Ask where someone or something is | entity + ở + đâu? | Nhà vệ sinh ở đâu? |
Use this short decision tree:
- Is the question “What is present or available here?” Choose có.
- Is the question “Where is this known person or thing?” Choose ở.
- Are both the entity and the place important? Decide which is the topic. Put that established information first, then use the corresponding pattern.
Có presents existence or availability
In an existential clause, có is the predicate. The entity after it is often new, indefinite, counted, or offered as useful information.
Trong túi có một cái sạc dự phòng.
There is a power bank in the bag.
Ở ga có quầy bán vé tự động không?
Is there an automatic ticket machine at the station?
Chiều nay có cuộc họp lúc ba giờ.
There is a meeting at three this afternoon.
The location can come first as a scene-setting frame: trong túi, ở ga. A time phrase such as chiều nay can frame an event in the same way. When the broad fact of existence matters more than the place, có may begin the clause: Có một quán ăn mở khuya ở cuối phố “There is a late-night restaurant at the end of the street.”
English existential there is a dummy subject, not a location. Vietnamese does not translate it with ở đó. The predicate có itself asserts presence. For a fuller account, see existential có with locative phrases.
Ở locates an identifiable referent
With ở, the subject normally comes first because the listener can already identify it. The location completes the message.
Chị Linh ở phòng họp tầng hai.
Linh is in the meeting room on the second floor.
Chìa khóa xe ở trong ngăn kéo bên trái.
The car key is in the left-hand drawer.
Bố mẹ tôi ở Cần Thơ.
My parents live in Can Tho.
Depending on context, ở can be translated as be at, be in, stay, or live. These are not four conjugations. Ở stays unchanged, while time phrases and context distinguish a temporary position from residence: Tuần này tôi ở nhà chị gái means “This week I’m staying at my sister’s house.” See ở for location for this range.
A minimal contrast: the same room, a different message
Imagine an office with one printer in the next room:
Máy in ở phòng bên.
The printer is in the next room. (You know which printer; I supply its location.)
Ở phòng bên có máy in.
There is a printer in the next room. (I introduce a printer as an available resource.)
Both clauses may be true in the same situation. They are not freely interchangeable in conversation. If someone asks Máy in ở đâu? “Where is the printer?”, the first pattern directly answers the question. If someone asks Ở đây có chỗ nào in tài liệu không? “Is there anywhere to print documents here?”, the second pattern directly answers it.
This is the genuine overlap zone: the same referent and location can be packaged either way when the speaker is free to treat the entity as established or newly relevant. The choice creates a stance difference, not a different map of the room.
Where only one choice expresses the intended meaning
Only có gives the neutral availability reading in a question such as this:
Khách sạn có Wi-Fi miễn phí không?
Does the hotel have free Wi-Fi?
Here the hotel is the domain in which a service is available. Wi-Fi ở khách sạn không? would instead sound like a question about whether some identifiable Wi-Fi service is at the hotel and is not the ordinary way to ask about availability.
Only ở directly answers a whereabouts question about an established person:
Anh Nam ở đâu? — Anh ấy ở quầy lễ tân.
Where is Nam? — He is at the reception desk.
Ở quầy lễ tân có anh Nam can be grammatical as a presentational announcement—“Nam is at reception / There is Nam at reception”—but it changes the discourse packaging. It does not neutrally preserve the answer structure “Nam is where?”
A dialogue where the choice changes the interpretation
A: Ở tầng này có máy photocopy không? B: Có, ở cuối hành lang có một máy. A: Máy đó ở cạnh thang máy à? B: Không, thang máy ở giữa hành lang; máy photocopy ở cạnh phòng họp.
A: Is there a photocopier on this floor? B: Yes, there is one at the end of the corridor. A: Is that machine next to the lift? B: No, the lift is halfway down the corridor; the photocopier is next to the meeting room.
The first two turns use có because the copier is being sought and then introduced. After một máy establishes it, máy đó becomes identifiable, so the conversation switches to ở. Social address is omitted naturally because the speakers’ relationship is not relevant. In a service encounter, kinship terms such as anh, chị, or cô would be chosen according to the participants, but they do not change the có/ở decision.
Register, region, and aspect
Both patterns are neutral and standard across Vietnamese-speaking regions. Pronunciation varies regionally, but spelling remains có and ở in all standard writing. Formal notices may favor compact existential phrases such as Tại sảnh có quầy hỗ trợ “There is an assistance desk in the lobby” (formal); everyday speech more often uses ở sảnh. Tại is a more formal locative frame, not a replacement for existential có.
Because có and locative ở are often stative, bare forms are common. Aspect markers add a viewpoint only when it matters:
Hiện giờ chị ấy đang ở Hà Nội, còn tuần sau sẽ ở Huế.
She is currently in Hanoi and will be in Hue next week.
Bây giờ đã có kết quả rồi.
The results are available now.
Đang ở means that the location holds during the current interval; it does not put đang after ở. Đã có ... rồi presents availability as a newly established fact. Neither marker is required merely because English uses a conjugated form of be.
Common Mistakes
1. Using ở as the existential predicate
❌ Ngoài hành lang ở ba chiếc ghế.
Incorrect: this attempts to use ở to present three chairs.
✅ Ngoài hành lang có ba chiếc ghế.
There are three chairs in the corridor.
The place is the frame; có introduces what is present there.
2. Using có to locate a known object without the right frame
❌ Chiếc chìa khóa dự phòng của tôi có cạnh máy tính.
Incorrect for the neutral meaning ‘My spare key is next to the computer.’
✅ Chiếc chìa khóa dự phòng của tôi ở cạnh máy tính.
My spare key is next to the computer.
The spare key is already identifiable, so ở supplies its location. Có after tôi would usually invite a possessive reading in another structure: Tôi có một chiếc chìa khóa dự phòng “I have a spare key.”
3. Translating English existential there with ở đó
❌ Ở đó là một quán cà phê gần đây.
Incorrect word-for-word attempt at ‘There is a café nearby.’
✅ Gần đây có một quán cà phê.
There is a café nearby.
English there contributes no physical location in there is. Vietnamese uses có, with gần đây as the actual locative phrase.
4. Keeping English word order when new information should follow có
❌ Một hiệu thuốc có ở cuối phố.
Awkward for a neutral announcement that a pharmacy is available at the end of the street.
✅ Ở cuối phố có một hiệu thuốc.
There is a pharmacy at the end of the street.
The repair makes the street location the frame and presents một hiệu thuốc as new information. The original can be rescued only in a contrastive context about whether such a pharmacy exists there.
Key Takeaways
- Choose có to present what exists, occurs, or is available: Ở đây có nước nóng.
- Choose ở to locate an identifiable referent: Nước nóng ở phòng tắm.
- The same world can support both patterns, but they answer different discourse questions.
- Keep the word order tied to the choice: place + có
- new entity, versus known entity + ở
- place.
- new entity, versus known entity + ở
- Do not choose from the single English gloss be; choose from information structure.
