Tiếp Tục and Continuation

Tiếp tục + predicate means “continue to ... / keep ...ing”: Chúng tôi tiếp tục làm việc sau giờ nghỉ “We continued working after the break.” It treats a situation as extending beyond a relevant point, often after an interruption, a transition, or a moment when stopping was possible.

Tiếp tục is a phase predicate, not an inflected progressive or future form. It is neutral in (informal) speech and (formal) writing; context, temporal phrases, and viewpoint markers locate the continuation. This page focuses on continuing or resuming an activity or process. Còn, which can present something as remaining or still available, is treated on Còn and Remaining Continuity.

Core construction and two kinds of continuity

The common verbal pattern is:

subject + (viewpoint marker) + tiếp tục + predicate

Nghỉ mười phút rồi chúng ta tiếp tục thảo luận nhé.

Let's take a ten-minute break and then continue the discussion.

Dù trời mưa, họ vẫn tiếp tục thi đấu.

Although it was raining, they still continued playing.

Sang năm, công ty sẽ tiếp tục đầu tư vào năng lượng sạch.

Next year, the company will continue investing in clean energy.

The first is resumption after a break. The second is uninterrupted persistence despite an obstacle. The third projects an existing policy into a later interval. Tiếp tục supports all three because its core claim is that the phase extends or starts up again rather than ending permanently.

💡
Tiếp tục presupposes or strongly suggests an earlier phase of the same relevant situation. If no prior activity, policy, or process is recoverable from context, “continue” has nothing to connect to.

Scope: what exactly continues?

The predicate following tiếp tục specifies the continuing situation. Objects and complements inside it narrow the scope.

Mai tiếp tục đọc cuốn tiểu thuyết trên tàu.

Mai continued reading the novel on the train.

Mai tiếp tục đọc sách trên tàu mỗi sáng.

Mai continued reading books on the train every morning.

The first can continue one interrupted reading event. The second continues a habit. With a new object, tiếp tục đọc cuốn khác means the larger activity of reading continues even though the individual book changes.

Tiếp tục + noun is also common in compact (formal) or administrative language, particularly with event nouns.

Sau phần giải lao, hội nghị tiếp tục chương trình làm việc.

After the break, the conference resumed its agenda.

In everyday language, a full verbal predicate—tiếp tục làm việc—is often more transparent. The noun pattern does not license any arbitrary noun: it works when the noun denotes an activity, program, journey, negotiation, or other continuable course.

Tiếp tục versus vẫn

Both can correspond to English still/continue, but they organize the message differently. Tiếp tục names continuation as a phase relation and can be used as a command. Vẫn marks persistence of a proposition, frequently against an expectation that it might no longer hold.

PatternMain contributionTypical question answered
tiếp tục làmextend or resume the activitywhat happens next?
vẫn làmthe proposition remains trueis it still the case?
vẫn tiếp tục làmcontinuation persists despite a reason to stopdid the obstacle end it?

Tôi vẫn làm ở công ty cũ.

I still work at my old company.

Sau khi đổi quản lý, tôi tiếp tục làm ở công ty cũ.

After the management change, I continued working at my old company.

Dù lương giảm, tôi vẫn tiếp tục làm ở đó thêm ba tháng.

Even though the salary was reduced, I still kept working there for another three months.

The last combination is not pointless repetition. Vẫn signals counterexpectational persistence; tiếp tục profiles extension of the work phase.

Combining with time and aspect expressions

Sau bữa trưa, họ đã tiếp tục cuộc họp.

After lunch, they resumed the meeting.

Nhóm kỹ thuật đang tiếp tục kiểm tra hệ thống.

The technical team is continuing to inspect the system.

Ngày mai chúng tôi sẽ tiếp tục thương lượng.

Tomorrow we will continue negotiating.

Đã presents the resumption as realized before the reference point. Đang places the observer inside the continuing phase. Sẽ projects it. None is required merely because English uses continued, is continuing, or will continue: an adverbial and discourse sequence may already locate the event.

Sáng hôm sau, chúng tôi tiếp tục đi về phía bắc.

The next morning, we continued north.

Here sáng hôm sau and the surrounding narrative make past reference clear. Adding đã would add “already realized” framing, not simply grammatical past tense.

The wider aspect map

FormCore viewpoint
đã ăneating already realized
đang ăneating in progress
sẽ ăneating projected
ăn rồicompletion or new post-eating state
từng đigoing as prior experience
mới đến / vừa đếnrecent arrival
chưa xongendpoint not yet reached
sắp mưarain near its onset
vẫn chờwaiting remains true, often counter to expectation
tiếp tục chờthe waiting phase is extended or resumed

These expressions can describe different portions of one sequence: Cuộc họp sắp bắt đầu before onset; cuộc họp đang diễn ra during it; sau giờ nghỉ, cuộc họp tiếp tục when it resumes; cuộc họp xong rồi after completion. Vietnamese builds the interpretation from event structure and discourse rather than selecting a form from an English-style tense paradigm.

Commands, requests, and institutional language

Tiếp tục + predicate is frequent in directives. Intonation and politeness expressions determine whether it is encouraging, neutral, or official.

Em cứ tiếp tục nói đi, anh đang nghe đây.

Go on talking; I'm listening.

Xin quý khách tiếp tục chờ trong giây lát.

Please continue waiting for a moment.

The first is (informal) and supportive; cứ ... đi gives permission or encouragement. The second is (formal) service language. Because tiếp tục presupposes an activity already underway, xin quý khách tiếp tục chờ may frustrate a listener who has been waiting a long time; that pragmatic effect is real even though the grammar is neutral.

Continuation after interruption versus starting anew

Whether tiếp tục means uninterrupted continuation or resumption depends on context. If the break matters, name it.

Điện bị cắt gần một giờ; khi có điện lại, nhóm kỹ sư tiếp tục thử nghiệm.

The power was out for nearly an hour; when it returned, the engineering team resumed testing.

Without the interruption clause, tiếp tục thử nghiệm could simply mean that the test carried on. Vietnamese does not need a separate verb form equivalent to English resume, though tiếp tục lại is heard (informal) when speakers explicitly emphasize restarting. In edited prose, tiếp tục alone is often sufficient because the interruption already supplies the meaning.

A dialogue where continuation changes the plan

— Báo cáo xong chưa? — Chưa xong. Tôi vừa sửa phần số liệu, giờ đang viết kết luận. — Mai làm tiếp được không? — Được. Sáng mai tôi sẽ tiếp tục viết, còn tối nay tôi vẫn kiểm tra các nguồn.

— Is the report finished? — Not yet. I've just revised the data section and I'm writing the conclusion now. — Can you carry on tomorrow? — Yes. Tomorrow morning I'll continue writing, while tonight I'll still check the sources.

Chưa xong says the endpoint has not been reached. Vừa sửa places one subtask just before now, and đang viết shows the current phase. Sẽ tiếp tục viết projects extension of that same writing task into tomorrow. Vẫn kiểm tra says source-checking remains true tonight, probably despite the proposed pause in writing. Notice that colloquial làm tiếp uses postverbal tiếp “do more/carry on”; it overlaps with tiếp tục làm but is shorter and strongly (informal).

Common Mistakes

1. Using tiếp tục when nothing has begun. Establish the prior phase or use bắt đầu for a true onset.

❌ Đây là buổi học đầu tiên và chúng ta tiếp tục học tiếng Việt.

Odd if nobody has studied Vietnamese before—there is no recoverable phase to continue.

✅ Đây là buổi học đầu tiên và chúng ta bắt đầu học tiếng Việt.

This is the first lesson, and we are beginning to learn Vietnamese.

2. Treating đã as compulsory with English continued. A past adverbial can locate the event.

❌ Sáng hôm sau chúng tôi đã tiếp tục đã đi.

Incorrect marker stacking copied from English tense marking.

✅ Sáng hôm sau chúng tôi tiếp tục đi.

The next morning, we continued on.

3. Assuming vẫn and tiếp tục are interchangeable. Vẫn asserts persistence; tiếp tục profiles extension or resumption.

❌ Sau giờ nghỉ, cuộc họp vẫn từ đầu lúc hai giờ.

Incorrect—vẫn cannot replace a verb meaning ‘resume/start again.’

✅ Sau giờ nghỉ, cuộc họp tiếp tục lúc hai giờ.

After the break, the meeting resumed at two.

4. Adding rồi as an automatic perfect marker. Use rồi only when completion or a new situation matters.

❌ Năm ngoái chúng tôi tiếp tục dự án rồi trong sáu tháng.

Awkward neutral past report—rồi does not simply translate an English perfect or past.

✅ Năm ngoái chúng tôi tiếp tục dự án thêm sáu tháng.

Last year we continued the project for another six months.

Key Takeaways

  • Tiếp tục + predicate extends or resumes a recoverable earlier phase.
  • Vẫn marks persistence of a proposition; combining vẫn tiếp tục adds counterexpectation to phase continuation.
  • Context and time expressions locate the continuation; đã, đang, and sẽ add viewpoints rather than tense agreement.
  • Use bắt đầu when no prior phase exists and tiếp tục when the same relevant activity, process, or policy carries on.
