Ngừng and dừng are lexical stop predicates, but they construe stopping differently. Ngừng foregrounds an unfolding process becoming inactive or suspended: ngừng sản xuất “cease production.” Dừng foregrounds motion or controlled activity reaching a stopping point: dừng xe “stop the vehicle,” dừng lại “come to a stop.” They overlap with speech, work, machinery, and institutional activities, yet their argument structure and preferred collocations are not identical.
Neither verb says that a task was successfully completed. An author can ngừng viết halfway through a book; a driver can dừng xe halfway to the destination. The contrast between completion marker rồi and resultative xong is reserved for the dedicated page.
Ngừng: suspend or terminate a process
Ngừng + process/activity selects something conceived as unfolding through time. The subject may be the agent who stops, the system that becomes inactive, or the institution that suspends an operation.
Nhà máy phải ngừng sản xuất hai ngày để bảo trì hệ thống.
The factory had to halt production for two days to maintain the system.
Cô ấy ngừng nói khi thấy mọi người đều nhìn về phía cửa.
She stopped speaking when she saw everyone looking toward the door.
Dịch vụ tạm ngừng hoạt động từ nửa đêm đến bốn giờ sáng.
The service is temporarily suspended from midnight to four in the morning.
Tạm ngừng explicitly presents the interruption as temporary; resumption remains expected. Ngừng hẳn or ngừng hoàn toàn cancels that inference and presents a definitive end.
Sau nhiều tháng thua lỗ, công ty ngừng hẳn việc triển khai dự án này.
After months of losses, the company stopped implementing this project altogether.
Ngừng can be intransitive when the process subject itself ceases: Mưa ngừng “The rain stopped,” máy ngừng chạy “the machine stopped running.” In everyday northern and southern speech, mưa tạnh is often more idiomatic for rain ending; natural collocation still matters.
Dừng: bring motion or controlled action to a boundary
Dừng strongly favors directed motion and controllable actions. It may be intransitive (xe dừng) or transitive/causative (tài xế dừng xe). Lại commonly marks arrival at the stationary state: dừng lại.
Xe buýt dừng lại trước cổng bệnh viện.
The bus stopped in front of the hospital gate.
Anh dừng xe ở trạm xăng phía trước giúp tôi nhé.
Please stop the car at the gas station ahead.
Đang đi, cô ấy bỗng dừng lại để nghe điện thoại.
While walking, she suddenly stopped to take a phone call.
The direct object in dừng xe is the entity caused to stop. With an activity complement, dừng + V means bring that activity to a stopping point: dừng phát sóng “stop broadcasting,” dừng thi công “halt construction.” This is especially common in administrative and technical (formal) usage.
Cơ quan chức năng yêu cầu nhà thầu dừng thi công ngay lập tức.
The authorities required the contractor to halt construction immediately.
For spontaneous processes with no controlling agent, ngừng is usually more natural: tim ngừng đập, máy ngừng hoạt động. Dừng becomes natural when a controller chooses a boundary: dừng máy, dừng chương trình.
Where the verbs overlap
With an agentive activity such as speaking or working, both can occur. The choice changes construal rather than objective truth.
| Construction | Preferred construal | Typical continuation |
|---|---|---|
| ngừng nói | speech ceases as an ongoing process | silence follows |
| dừng lại, không nói nữa | speaker reaches a deliberate break | attention shifts |
| ngừng hoạt động | system/process becomes inactive | temporary or permanent, context decides |
| dừng hoạt động | an agent or policy brings operations to a boundary | decision/control is salient |
| ngừng máy | shut the machine/process down | technical process focus |
| dừng máy | stop the machine at this point | operator and stopping point salient |
| tạm ngừng | suspension with likely resumption | thời gian / để... |
| dừng hẳn | come to a definitive stop | no further movement/activity |
These are preferences, not an absolute dictionary partition. Genre and collocation sometimes override the prototype. For example, public notices use both tạm ngừng cung cấp điện and tạm dừng cung cấp điện; the former profiles suspension of supply, while the latter can sound more like a scheduled operational decision.
Argument structure and phase complements
Both verbs can head a stopping predicate, but the following argument need not have the same form:
- subject + ngừng + activity: Họ ngừng tranh luận.
- subject + dừng + process noun phrase: Họ dừng cuộc thử nghiệm.
- controller + dừng + controlled entity: Tài xế dừng xe.
- moving entity + dừng (lại): Chiếc xe dừng lại.
The transitive alternation is especially productive with dừng because a controller can cause a moving entity to reach zero motion.
Tài xế dừng chiếc xe tải bên đường để kiểm tra hàng hóa.
The driver stopped the truck by the roadside to inspect the cargo.
Nghe chuông báo động, mọi người ngừng làm việc và rời khỏi tòa nhà.
On hearing the alarm, everyone stopped working and left the building.
An explicit duration can measure the interruption: ngừng mười phút or dừng lại mười phút. With ngừng, the process is suspended for that interval; with dừng lại, an actor or moving entity remains at a stopping point.
Đoàn xe dừng lại mười phút ở đèo để mọi người nghỉ.
The convoy stopped for ten minutes at the mountain pass so everyone could rest.
Aspect markers locate different phases
Because ngừng and dừng are themselves change-of-phase predicates, other markers can take scope over the stopping event: đã ngừng says cessation is already realized, đang dừng can present the stopping event or a temporary halt as ongoing, and sẽ dừng projects it. Clause-final rồi can present the stopped state as newly relevant.
Quạt đang quay chậm lại và sắp dừng hẳn.
The fan is slowing down and is about to stop completely.
Hệ thống đã ngừng gửi thông báo từ tối qua.
The system stopped sending notifications last night.
Vietnamese does not require one marker for every English tense. Consider the broader contrast:
| Form | Contribution |
|---|---|
| đã ăn | prior realization, not automatically exhaustive completion |
| đang ăn | ongoing internal phase |
| sẽ ăn | projected event |
| ăn rồi | completion/change relevant to the discourse |
| từng đi | prior experience |
| mới đến / vừa đến | recent arrival |
| chưa xong | task endpoint unreached |
| sắp mưa | imminent rain |
| vẫn chạy | continued operation |
| ngừng chạy / dừng lại | exit from operation / arrival at a stop |
In Sáng qua máy ngừng chạy lúc chín giờ, the adverbials anchor the event in the past. Adding đã is useful if the speaker highlights that cessation was already realized before another point, but it is not a mandatory past-tense inflection.
A dialogue: suspension versus a stopping point
— Why has the production line stopped? — The technical team temporarily suspended production to inspect a sensor. The delivery trucks also have to stop outside the gate. — When will operations resume? — In about two hours; this is only a suspension, not a permanent closure.
Ngừng chạy describes the process becoming inactive. Agentive tạm ngừng sản xuất presents an authorized suspension. Dừng lại ngoài cổng gives moving vehicles a spatial stopping point. The final contrast makes the resumption inference explicit.
Quick decision aid
| Situation | Best starting choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| rain, heartbeat, service, production ceases | ngừng | unfolding process becomes inactive |
| person or vehicle comes to a stop | dừng (lại) | motion reaches a boundary |
| agent stops a vehicle/machine | dừng + object | caused stopping alternation |
| planned temporary suspension | tạm ngừng / tạm dừng | institutional collocation determines nuance |
| quit a habit or long-term role | thôi / bỏ | withdrawal rather than a local process boundary |
| finish a bounded task | V + xong | successful endpoint, not mere stopping |
Common Mistakes
1. Using dừng for every English stop. A spontaneous or technical process often collocates more naturally with ngừng.
❌ Cơn mưa dừng lúc nửa đêm.
Unnatural for spontaneous rain ending; bare dừng suggests a bounded or controlled stopping event.
✅ Mưa ngừng rơi lúc nửa đêm.
The rain stopped falling at midnight.
2. Using ngừng where a spatial stopping point is central. Vehicles normally dừng (lại) ở a place.
❌ Xe buýt ngừng ở góc phố để đón khách.
Awkward for an ordinary route stop because the spatial boundary, not suspended operation, is central.
✅ Xe buýt dừng ở góc phố để đón khách.
The bus stopped at the street corner to pick up passengers.
3. Confusing stopping with finishing. Cessation does not entail completion.
❌ Tôi dừng viết báo cáo lúc năm giờ nên bây giờ có thể gửi khách hàng.
Wrong if the report was completed; dừng says the writing stopped, possibly unfinished.
✅ Tôi làm xong báo cáo lúc năm giờ nên bây giờ có thể gửi khách hàng.
I finished the report at five, so I can send it to the client now.
4. Treating đã or rồi as compulsory English tense equivalents. Use discourse and aspectual meaning, not a copied tense template.
❌ Hôm qua hệ thống đã ngừng rồi hoạt động lúc trưa.
Incorrect order produced by stacking đã and rồi as if they formed an English past perfect.
✅ Hôm qua hệ thống ngừng hoạt động lúc trưa.
Yesterday the system stopped operating at noon.
Key Takeaways
- Ngừng profiles an unfolding process becoming inactive; dừng profiles a controlled or spatial stopping boundary.
- Dừng has a productive causative alternation: xe dừng versus tài xế dừng xe.
- Tạm ngừng/tạm dừng favors resumption; hẳn/hoàn toàn supports a definitive reading.
- Neither verb entails successful completion. Use xong for a reached task endpoint and hết for exhaustive extent.
- Aspect markers can scope over the stopping event, but time reference still comes from context, adverbials, and discourse rather than a tense paradigm.
