Bắt đầu + predicate means “begin/start to ...” and selects the boundary where a situation comes into being: Trời bắt đầu mưa “It started to rain.” Grammatically, bắt đầu behaves like a phase predicate taking another predicate as its complement. It does not conjugate that predicate or locate the beginning in past time by itself.
The construction is standard in (informal) conversation and (formal) writing. Time comes from an adverbial, the surrounding narrative, or an optional viewpoint marker. This page concerns entry into a phase. A situation that is close but has not started belongs on Sắp and Imminence.
Basic form and the ingressive viewpoint
The most common order is:
subject + (time/viewpoint material) + bắt đầu + predicate
Khoảng chín giờ, khách bắt đầu đến.
At around nine, the guests began to arrive.
Con bé bắt đầu biết tự chọn quần áo rồi.
The little girl is beginning to be able to choose her own clothes.
Từ tháng sau, tôi sẽ bắt đầu làm ở văn phòng mới.
Starting next month, I will begin working at the new office.
In the first example, khoảng chín giờ locates the onset. In the second, rồi marks a new current state: the ability has now emerged. In the third, sẽ projects the beginning. The semantic work is distributed; bắt đầu itself simply zooms in on inception.
What can begin
Activities and extended events combine readily with bắt đầu.
Sau giờ nghỉ, mọi người bắt đầu thảo luận ngân sách.
After the break, everyone began discussing the budget.
Tôi bắt đầu học tiếng Việt khi chuyển đến Hà Nội.
I started learning Vietnamese when I moved to Hà Nội.
States can also begin when they are understood as a change into a new condition. Bắt đầu hiểu is not a strange instantaneous “action of understanding”; it profiles the threshold at which understanding develops.
Nghe cô giải thích lần thứ hai, tôi bắt đầu hiểu vấn đề.
After hearing her explain it a second time, I began to understand the problem.
Achievements that are already near-instantaneous need an iterative, gradual, or preparatory reading to sound natural. Khách bắt đầu đến means the first guests arrive and the arrival sequence gets underway. For one punctual event, Vietnamese often names preparation or imminence instead: Máy bay sắp cất cánh “The plane is about to take off.”
Scope and complements
Everything after bắt đầu normally belongs to the phase that begins. Compare:
Lan bắt đầu đọc cuốn sách bằng tiếng Việt.
Lan began reading the book in Vietnamese.
Lan bắt đầu đọc sách tiếng Việt mỗi tối.
Lan began reading Vietnamese books every evening.
The first starts one reading event; the second starts a habit. With coordinated predicates, repeat bắt đầu only if distinct starting boundaries matter. Anh ấy bắt đầu tập thể dục và ăn uống điều độ naturally places both changes inside one new routine.
Bắt đầu từ + time/place/item instead takes a starting point as its complement.
Khóa học bắt đầu từ thứ Hai tuần tới.
The course starts from next Monday.
This is not identical to bắt đầu học “begin studying”: one names the beginning of an entity or schedule; the other selects the onset of a predicate.
Combining with aspect and time expressions
| Form | Interpretation | Use when |
|---|---|---|
| bắt đầu làm | begin working; time from context | the narrative already locates the event |
| đã bắt đầu làm | the beginning is already realized | confirming prior onset |
| đang bắt đầu làm | the onset is unfolding now | a gradual or extended launch |
| sẽ bắt đầu làm | the onset is projected | a plan or prediction |
| bắt đầu làm rồi | a new phase now holds | announcing a change |
Cuộc họp đã bắt đầu lúc tám giờ.
The meeting began at eight.
Hệ thống đang bắt đầu hoạt động ổn định hơn.
The system is beginning to operate more steadily.
The progressive combination works best when the onset itself has internal development. For a sharp boundary, đang bắt đầu can sound unnecessarily elaborate unless the speaker is narrating the launch as it happens.
A compact map of neighboring viewpoints
| Form | View selected |
|---|---|
| đã ăn | eating already realized |
| đang ăn | inside the eating event |
| sẽ ăn | eating projected |
| ăn rồi | eating completed or a new post-eating state |
| bắt đầu ăn | crossing into the eating event |
| từng đi | going as prior experience |
| mới đến / vừa đến | recent arrival |
| chưa xong | completion boundary not reached |
| sắp mưa | rain close to, but before, onset |
| vẫn chờ | waiting continues |
This is not a conjugation chart. One event can move through several descriptions: Trời sắp mưa before the first drops, Trời bắt đầu mưa rồi at onset, and Trời đang mưa once the rain is underway.
Narrative sequencing without marker overload
Once an adverbial establishes time, an unmarked sequence is natural.
Sáu giờ, trời bắt đầu sáng. Chúng tôi thu dọn lều, ăn nhanh rồi lên đường.
At six, it began to get light. We packed the tent, ate quickly, and then set off.
Only bắt đầu is needed to highlight the onset of daylight; sáu giờ locates the sequence, and rồi orders later actions. Repeating đã before every predicate would impose repeated “already realized” framing where the narrative order is already clear.
A dialogue where onset changes the interpretation
— Mưa chưa? — Chưa, nhưng gió mạnh lên rồi. — Thế thì cất đồ vào đi. — Muộn rồi, trời bắt đầu mưa rồi đấy!
— Is it raining yet? — No, but the wind has got stronger. — Then bring the things inside. — Too late, it's starting to rain now!
At first, chưa says the rain has not begun, although the changed wind suggests it is near. The final bắt đầu mưa rồi announces that the boundary has now been crossed. English may use is starting, but Vietnamese rồi also foregrounds the change in the current situation.
Common Mistakes
1. Treating bắt đầu as past tense. It marks onset; a time expression or context locates it.
❌ Bắt đầu học tiếng Việt nghĩa là việc học luôn xảy ra trong quá khứ.
Incorrect claim—bắt đầu học is not inherently past.
✅ Ngày mai tôi bắt đầu học tiếng Việt.
Tomorrow I start learning Vietnamese.
2. Using đã automatically because English says started. A past adverbial can do the locating.
❌ Hôm qua tôi đã bắt đầu đã đọc cuốn sách.
Incorrect—repeating đã around bắt đầu does not copy English past marking.
✅ Hôm qua tôi bắt đầu đọc cuốn sách.
Yesterday I started reading the book.
3. Using sắp after the event has visibly begun. Sắp stays before the boundary.
❌ Những giọt đầu tiên đang rơi mà tôi vẫn nói: Trời sắp mưa.
Wrong in the intended situation—the first drops mean the rain has begun.
✅ Những giọt mưa đầu tiên đã rơi; trời bắt đầu mưa rồi.
The first raindrops have fallen; it's beginning to rain.
4. Adding rồi as if it merely translated the English perfect. Use it when the onset establishes a new current state.
❌ Năm 2012 tôi bắt đầu làm ở đây rồi, năm 2015 tôi chuyển đi.
Awkward neutral chronology—rồi falsely foregrounds a current change inside a dated narrative.
✅ Năm 2012 tôi bắt đầu làm ở đây; năm 2015 tôi chuyển đi.
I started working here in 2012; in 2015 I moved away.
Key Takeaways
- Bắt đầu + predicate selects the onset of an event, habit, ability, or state.
- It does not itself mean past; adverbials, context, and viewpoint expressions locate the onset.
- Sắp V is before the starting boundary, bắt đầu V crosses it, and đang V views the situation from inside.
- Use rồi when the new phase matters now, not as an automatic equivalent of an English perfect.
