Rồi versus Xong

Both rồi and xong can occur after a predicate and can make an English translation contain already, have, or finish. Their grammatical work is nevertheless different. Post-predicate rồi presents a proposition as attained and updates the current discourse state; xong is a lexical result predicate meaning that a bounded activity has reached its inherent endpoint. Compare ăn rồi “has eaten / ate already” with ăn xong “finish eating.”

This distinction matters because Vietnamese does not build an English-style perfect tense by attaching one auxiliary to every verb. Event type, time expressions, discourse context, and particles jointly locate an event. This page focuses on rồi and xong; the contrast between preverbal đã and post-predicate rồi belongs on the dedicated page.

The core contrast: update versus endpoint

After a predicate, rồi says that the described state of affairs now counts as established. The event may have a natural endpoint, but it need not. It therefore combines readily with achievements and states as well as activities.

Tôi ăn rồi, bạn cứ gọi món đi.

I've eaten already; go ahead and order.

Chị ấy biết chuyện rồi.

She knows about it now / She already knows.

Ngoài trời tối hẳn rồi, mình gọi xe về nhé.

It's completely dark outside now; let's call a car home.

In the first example, the relevant update is that the speaker is no longer waiting to eat. Nothing asserts that every last bite of a particular meal was completed. In biết rồi and tối rồi, there is not even a task to finish: a state has become current.

Xong selects an event that can be understood as a delimited task. It asserts arrival at that task's terminal boundary.

Tôi ăn xong bát phở rồi mới uống cà phê.

I finished the bowl of phở before having coffee.

Làm xong báo cáo thì gửi cho tôi nhé.

When you finish the report, send it to me.

Nhóm kỹ thuật sửa xong máy vào gần nửa đêm.

The technical team finished repairing the machine near midnight.

The object often supplies the boundary: ăn xong bát phở is bounded by one bowl, and làm xong báo cáo by a completed report. A bare activity can also receive a contextually understood boundary: Tôi ăn xong rồi means the relevant meal is finished.

💡
Ask two different questions. Is this news now? favors rồi. Did the task reach its endpoint? favors xong. When both answers are yes, Vietnamese can say xong rồi.

Why xong rồi is not redundant

The sequence V + xong + rồi layers two meanings. Xong belongs to the event description and identifies its endpoint; rồi presents that completed result as the newly relevant state.

Tôi đóng gói xong rồi; sáng mai chỉ cần mang ra bưu điện.

I've finished packing it; tomorrow morning I only need to take it to the post office.

Máy cập nhật xong rồi, anh có thể khởi động lại.

The machine has finished updating; you can restart it.

In a reply, short Xong rồi is extremely common (informal): it means both “finished” and “that is the state now.” By contrast, bare Rồi often answers a yes/no question whose predicate is recoverable.

— Em nộp hồ sơ chưa? — Rồi ạ. / — Em điền xong chưa? — Xong rồi ạ.

— Have you submitted the application? — Yes, I have. / — Have you finished filling it in? — Yes, I have.

The polite particle ạ marks deference; it does not affect aspect. In formal prose, writers may spell out the event rather than rely on short rồi, but the aspectual contrast remains.

Lexical aspect controls what sounds natural

Xong is most natural with accomplishments: writing a report, repairing a device, reading an assigned text, processing an application. With an activity lacking a built-in endpoint, the context must impose one. Chạy xong can mean finish the planned run, the race, or the running segment; it cannot mean merely “have run at some time.”

With states, xong is normally impossible unless the state is reinterpreted as a task or ordeal. Biết xong is not the ordinary equivalent of “have known.” Học xong is possible because study is construed as a course, lesson, or planned session reaching completion.

Cô ấy học xong chương trình thạc sĩ trong hai năm.

She completed the master's program in two years.

Tôi biết kết quả rồi, nhưng chưa thể công bố.

I know the result now, but I can't announce it yet.

Achievements such as đến “arrive” already encode a boundary. Đến rồi naturally announces arrival. Đến xong is generally not the same construction; it needs an unusual task-like reading or a following event in a serial sequence.

Time reference and scope

Neither item by itself fixes an event in the past. Temporal adverbials and the larger clause can locate the endpoint in the past or future.

Tối qua tôi làm xong lúc mười một giờ.

Last night I finished at eleven.

Ngày mai làm xong phần này, chúng ta sẽ chuyển sang chương tiếp theo.

Tomorrow, once we finish this section, we'll move to the next chapter.

Đến thứ Sáu là bên họ xử lý xong rồi.

By Friday, they will have finished processing it.

The last sentence often receives an English future-perfect translation, but Vietnamese has no future-perfect inflection here. Đến thứ Sáu provides the reference boundary, xử lý xong supplies completion, and rồi treats the result as settled relative to that future point.

Negation reveals another difference. Chưa xong says the relevant task has not yet reached completion and normally leaves completion expected. Không xong says completion does not or will not occur, often because of inability or an obstacle. Chưa ... rồi is not mechanically assembled as an English “not ... already”; the position and scope must be interpreted clause by clause.

Bản thiết kế vẫn chưa xong, nên cuộc họp phải lùi lại.

The design still isn't finished, so the meeting has to be postponed.

Nếu mạng cứ chập chờn thế này thì tối nay tải không xong đâu.

If the connection keeps cutting out like this, the download won't finish tonight.

A compact decision aid

FormMain contributionNatural use
V + rồithe proposition is now established; discourse updateĂn rồi. “I have eaten.”
V + xonga bounded task reaches its endpointĂn xong. “Be done eating / finish eating.”
V + xong rồicompleted endpoint plus current updateViết xong rồi. “I've finished writing it.”
chưa + V + xongexpected endpoint has not yet been reachedChưa sửa xong. “It isn't fixed yet.”
không + V + xongcompletion fails or is impossible in contextLàm không xong. “Can't get it finished.”

The wider aspect system makes the division clearer:

Minimal formWhat it contributes
đã ăneating is anterior in the relevant frame
đang ăneating is in progress
sẽ ăneating is projected or predicted
ăn rồihaving eaten is now established
từng đigoing occurred at least once in prior experience
mới đếnarrival was recent
chưa xongthe endpoint remains unreached
sắp mưarain is imminent
vẫn chờwaiting persists

These forms are not cells in a tense conjugation. They contribute different kinds of aspectual and discourse information.

A natural exchange

— Em làm xong slide chưa? — Em sửa nội dung xong rồi, nhưng phần hình ảnh vẫn chưa xong. Chắc mười phút nữa là xong ạ.

— Have you finished the slides? — I've finished revising the content, but the images still aren't done. They should be finished in about ten minutes.

The first xong is under chưa and asks whether the endpoint has been reached. Sửa ... xong rồi asserts both completion and its relevance now. Vẫn chưa xong says one subtask remains incomplete, while future-oriented mười phút nữa là xong locates the endpoint ten minutes ahead without sẽ.

Common Mistakes

Using xong for any past event

❌ Hôm qua tôi xong gặp Lan ở siêu thị.

Incorrect — xong cannot serve as a general past-tense marker before gặp.

✅ Hôm qua tôi gặp Lan ở siêu thị.

Yesterday I ran into Lan at the supermarket.

Hôm qua already locates the meeting. There is no bounded task whose completion xong could express.

Treating rồi as a universal English perfect

❌ Tôi sống ở Hà Nội rồi năm năm.

Incorrect for ‘I have lived in Hà Nội for five years’ — rồi is misplaced and wrongly treated as a perfect auxiliary.

✅ Tôi sống ở Hà Nội được năm năm rồi.

I have lived in Hà Nội for five years now.

The duration construction V + được + duration + rồi profiles a state extending up to now. English have lived does not license simply inserting rồi after the verb.

Confusing occurrence with full completion

❌ Tôi đọc cuốn sách rồi, nhưng mới đọc được nửa cuốn.

Misleading — in this context đọc ... rồi strongly suggests the relevant reading has been accomplished.

✅ Tôi đang đọc cuốn sách đó, nhưng mới đọc được nửa cuốn.

I'm reading that book, but I've only got halfway through it.

The repair uses đang for an ongoing event and mới ... được for the limited attained amount.

Assuming xong rồi must refer to the past

❌ Ngày mai tôi sẽ đã làm xong báo cáo.

Incorrect — Vietnamese does not form a future perfect by stacking sẽ and đã before the predicate.

✅ Ngày mai, làm xong báo cáo rồi tôi sẽ gọi cho anh.

Tomorrow, once I've finished the report, I'll call you.

The future day and sẽ gọi provide temporal orientation. Làm xong expresses the endpoint; rồi orders that endpoint before the call without an English-style stack of future and perfect auxiliaries.

Key Takeaways

  • Rồi marks an attained, currently relevant update and can follow events or states.
  • Xong asserts completion of a bounded task; its compatibility depends on lexical aspect and context.
  • Xong rồi combines endpoint completion with a discourse update.
  • Past, present, and future readings come from context and adverbials, not from either word functioning as a tense suffix.
